One thing into another conversion GB ** Complete/Archived **

Post by Martin R »

Anyone fancy this? Any subject, any scale, any era, but must not be finished as the version provided by the kit.

So . . . Airfix Spitfire I / IIa as a Spitfire Va (minor - different oil cooler and decals), Corsair F4U-1A as a FAA Corsair Mk II (fairly minor - just clip the wings), FROG Do335A-12 as a B-variant (involved: dual to single seat conversion plus addition of 30mm wing cannon).

Scratch-building, resin add on bits, vacform, conversion sets, white metal, cross-kitting all allowed. This isn't about accurising or detailing; it's specifically about ending up with a different variant than what the bits provide for in the box.

What do you think?

regards,

Martin

Would a Spitfire Ia to IIa (LR) be okay?

Edit: need to add an underwing tank

IMO, there must be some surgery involved, not just simple substitution ...

Is that the 3D-kits conversion set? I've used their stuff before (shame they went under) - I did the mk.II Spitfire Rotal conversion set - you have to cut plastic to drill a hole for the coffman starter blisters :)

If you want Spitfires - Pavla did a nice PR Spitfire conversion set.

I would have no problem with that per se, John, as the FROG Do335 example should indeed involve some surgery but it depends what the GB is about. A conversion GB could indeed be something very simple for which substitution is all that is required, for instance AndrewR's example of Spitfire I / IIa to IIa(LR); alternatively, if what we're wanting is a "surgery" or "cut and shut" GB, then that's something a bit different. "Cut and shut" may not involve conversion to a different variant at all; it could be about accurising an existing kit with either AM or scratchbuilding, which was not really what I was initially thinking about.

I also remember that the What If GB earlier this year allowed both "surgery" and "changing the markings on a standard kit", so the original intent wouldn't be out of kilter with that precedent. I also know that some of the membership build pretty much oob and I was hoping to tempt some of them to do something a bit different, but without necessarily the challenge of "surgery". Frankly, I hoped to get more people interested in taking part by not setting the bar too high. Of course, we may have more than enough interested in a "surgery" GB, so as I originally said, I have no problem if this morphs into something a bit different than my initial suggestion if it gets more people interested. Let the discussion continue!

Martin

I'm in the "keep it simple" camp. I have the resin LR tank for the Spitfire. :)

Although I am going to build the Art Model Mig-23UB for the MIG GB, I do have a conversion set in resin for the Academy MIG-23S. Thought I might enter this with that?.

I am up for this any time, and can promise to do something with enough surgery to satisfy whatever the entry rule is. I have a lot of conversion kits and cross-kitting ideas stored up.

Thanks all for your interest.

Given the state of the Calendar for the rest of the year at the moment, if this were a go-er I think it'd have to be next year sometime anyway; if there's sufficient interest, I'd run a poll to choose a date. Re interest registered, I make that:

Me
AndrewR
Marky607
K5083
Lancfan
JRatz?
Sir T?

So we would need a few more even to make this (with whatever constraints we decide) a go-er. Anyone else?

regards,

Martin

I'm up for this. Endless possibilities in a variety of topics might give me a push to do some of the conversations that have been rattling about in my head for ages.
