'One for the books' -Book/comics GB *** Complete/Archived***

Post by Purplethistle »

Don't run away yet! bear with me...
Following from the hugely enjoyable and diverse 'C'ompact 'D'iorama GB, anyone up for a GB based on books and comics?
The subject could be factual or fictional e.g (s)
Factual
any of Douglas Baders aircraft from 'Reach for the sky';
any aircraft, vehicle, tank etc. used by the subject of a biography or history E.G Band of brothers
any historical or popular culture figure.

Fictional
Tintin;
Biggles;
James Bond vehicles, aircraft or characters;
Characters or aircraft from 'Piece of cake' or any other Derek Robinson book;
KG200;
Game of thrones;
War & peace, Sharpe or similar
Victor, Warlord, Commando comics.

The CD GB was a cool way to display models, and there could be extra kudos for incorporating the subject into the cover of the book or comic. (Not necessarily the actual book or comic, with Google and a home printer a copy could be made for backdrop purposes)

Does anyone make Johnny Red decals? On that subject, I was thinking just the other day of building a model of a very evocative John Colquhon drawing of gas-masked Uhlans from Charley's War.

or a Goshawk Squadron scene..

or a Flower Class as HMS Nightshade

or...

Suffice to say, I'm interested!

I am all over this. I've been planning some Johnny Red builds for some time and I have the kits already. Unfortunately as far as I know no-one does Decals for Johnny Red or the Falcons.
I remember that Dirk (Dirkpitt289) was planning on doing Johnny's Mosquito with the gun turret. I posted the turret to him a while back.

All the best.

I like this idea and funny but I started a comic book build this morning (Star Wars related). A few years back I built Johnny Reds Hurricane from Battle comics

http://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=217& ... johnny+red

From the moment I finished it I had aspirations of building his red Mosquito, Thanks to Greg (Gregers) i have what I need to build it. I also have my sights set on a very early Romulan Warbird from the old Star Trek comics from DC.

Keep me posted on this one

Hi Dirk. That star trek build sounds interesting. I'll keep you posted on this if you like.

I would be very interested in doing Carlos Ezquerra's Major Eazy in his Alfa Romeo 'vert. If, big if, I could track down a suitable Alfa 6C 1750 kit. I'm not sure if there even is such a kit. But if there were… well, maybe. My figure painting skills would have to go through the loop to even approach pulling it off but I would be up for it.

The good major himself, of course, would have to be replete with big smoky cheroot and Afrika Korps kepi. I'm not sure how one would do cigar smoke to scale, however.

Someone in Airfix Magazine converted a Montys Humber to 'Major Eazys car' back in the late 70s, but I reckon the Matchbox Jaguar SS100 (reissued by AMT) is much closer.
As for the cheroot & smoke, I've previously used glue crud from a tube nozzle with a thinned grey paint wash for cigarette smoke and freezing weather breath condensation. I've also used strands of Hoover dust around a short bit of thin wire, (painted white at one end to represent the cigarette, or brown for a cheroot ) sprayed with matt varnish to give it some rigidity.
....Sorted! :-D

When they re-ran Major Eazy in Battle during the 80s, apparently they (badly) edited out the cigar. However, this made it frequently look as though the good Major were making a time-honoured two-fingered gesture...

I'm very tempted to try building Chitty Chitty Bang Bang from the original illustrations from the book, by John Burlingham.

http://www.ianfleming.com/chitty-chitty-bang-bang-2/;

Vastly superior to the movie version, and something that's always stuck with me, as I explain here:

I think the Airfix 1/32 Bentley would do as a basis for this.

Cheers

I've never seen that before. That would be a good chap to have in the Squadron!
