Does anyone make Johnny Red decals? On that subject, I was thinking just the other day of building a model of a very evocative John Colquhon drawing of gas-masked Uhlans from Charley's War.

or a Goshawk Squadron scene..

or a Flower Class as HMS Nightshade

or...

Suffice to say, I'm interested!

Was this the Charleys War image? I have a vague memory of another picture of gas masked Germans in a trench

I'm very tempted to try building Chitty Chitty Bang Bang from the original illustrations from the book, by John Burlingham.

I've never seen that before. That would be a good chap to have in the Squadron!

I'd need to get some figures for Commander Caractus Potts RN, his wife Mimsie and the children Jemima and Jeremy. Probably 1960's styles. Any ideas?

I'd also like to pose it in flight, I have the stand from the Anime TSR-2 for that job.

I think someone mentioned the Airfix 1/32 Bentley, although Chitty seems to have more of a boat-tail ? Maybe the Matchbox 1/32 Aston Martin Ulster would be better.

In 1/32 scale;
I'd need to check the rear end but I'd suggest the Matchbox Mercedes SSK would be a better starting point to match that book illustration. Or perhaps one of the old Pyro /Lifelike kits of US cars.
AFAIR the Mercedes is a two seater so would need a stretch put in for the rear seats. Can be done in plastic card.
The boat tail is harder. I'd carve the shape from a block of balsa wood or similar
The Aston Martin tail - the 'Ulster' - is the wrong way up and just can't be turned 180* to suit

For people; the Airfix 1933 Alfa Romeo has both male driver and female passenger. Or there are peoples for model railways, some are seated, some of these are about 1/30 scale but don't look too bad against 1/32 figures.

The children are harder; I'd go for 1/48 scale seated figures. The boy is easier, a seated WW1 soldier can be made to suit him. For the girl a lot of milliput to make a dress will be needed as seated females are hard to find.

A lot of cross kitting and searching out possible candidates for altering to suit.

P.S. I was going to keep this secret(!), but it would be pointless as it would eventually be seen and the two aircraft would be obvious once building starts!!.

Background Story. (Try to keep it short Marky!!).
This basically involves a Sopwith Camel pilot and wingman in World War I. After some aerial adventures they meet a Belgian pilot who crash lands at their base. He begins flying with the Squadron and the pilot and the RFC pilot become friends. Fast forward twenty years to 1939 and the same RFC Camel pilot is now Squadron Commander of a Hurricane unit in Belgium (or near the France/Belgium border) in 1940. (I'm not sure if he has the same chap as his wingman!). He and his current wingman return to their base and find it swarming with Germans including a tank (hardly fair!!). The Hurricanes are wrecked but the two escape and find themselves near a country mansion. It turns out this is owned/is the family estate of the Belgian pilot he met in 1918. He bought several Camels and engines after the war as surplus and the three begin flying them against the Blitzkrieg-ing German forces. Eventually they are foced back and land near Dunkirk. Out of fuel they are about to torch the Camels when am Army truck is spotted about to dump a load of fuel. They 'requisition' this and fly the three Camels back to Blighty. The three then fight on in WWII.
The scene on the front is from the three men's efforts against the Blitzkrieg and the Stuka units.

Can anyone identify this plane from 'Tintin in the Land of the Soviets'? It might be entirely fictional; Hergé usually illustrated real aircraft, but this is a very early book.

Looks like a Junkers D.1 or something.

Tail's not right for a Junkers.

It is closer to the Polikarpov (sp) I-1, but I'm no expert -- in what time frame does the book take place, the I-1 was early 1920's.
