Its not just how good your painting is, its how good the touch-ups are too.

More than enough room - David - Welcome aboard. It'll be interesting to see that conversion.lancfan wrote:Any room for an old tool Airfix Lightning/Aeroclub E.E. P-1a conversion ?

Welcome aboard John - that'll be a great kit to see.jRatz wrote:After hanging several off my K-2 Tanker, I am down to one Lightning not named P-38-- the Whirlikits 1/72 T.5 resin job, is that allowable ?
I don't really want to start right away, I have some work & other priorities to get off the bench and holiday plans are unsure -- sounds like 2020 maybe just kidding, but I cannot start right away other than maybe paw over the box, check parts and decals.
No Worries about not starting right away - I think the overall consensus is to start in earnest in the New Year anyway.
I’ll open a build thread this week to kick things off – and then people can hop aboard when they’re ready. Hopefully it’ll be a good mojo builder for January (it certainly fits with my desire to build some more British Jets).

Sounds like a good mix - I'm not sure on the T.55 though as the kit decals are pretty poor. I actualy have some really interesting T.5 Markings for a bird based at RAF Akrotirifredk wrote:So thats a

Your model, build it the way you want.
Just saying;
The T55 is not the same as the T5
T55 has the long fuel tank, the T5 has the short fuel tank. And the wiring run along one side is different too.
An old conversion was to use the belly tank from an Airfix F3 on the Matchbox T55 to get a T5 and the long tank on the F3 to get a [version I can't remember which number now]

Yes, Maintrack did a resin F1/2/3 belly tank and F1 style fin in a packaged conversion kit so you could make the Mbox T55 into a T4 or T5.fredk wrote:Your model, build it the way you want.

I did an F2A years ago by combining the Mbox T55 wing and belly tank with the old Afx F1 kit. So I have the bits to do the opposite to make a T4 or 5. I'll probably end up joining you gentlemen on this but have to decide which of my ancient stash to pick and I'll wait to do that until I'm done on the Winkle GB.

woops! Thanks for the call out Fred - I didn't know that. T.55 it is then as I rather like the RSAF markings. I'll just need to source decals.fredk wrote:Your model, build it the way you want.

I'm not all that up on the various marks of Lightning - can anyone recommend a good book?
Cheers

Aren't the wing leading edges different on the T.55 too?.Sir T wrote:woops! Thanks for the call out Fred - I didn't know that. T.55 it is then as I rather like the RSAF markings. I'll just need to source decals.fredk wrote:Your model, build it the way you want.

As for books I like the Modellers Data File on the Lightning.
Sowrd make the T.4 and the T.5, but I'd be in with an F.6, it's the only one I have in stock!!.
Hoping to return to modelling sometime this year!!

Re: 'tis a bit quiet around here - EE Lightning SB anyone?
Ok sod it, I'd really like to use the decals my friend sent me too - I'm going to go for the T.5 conversion using the F.3 kit I've just picked up from ebay.
I've never done any kit bashing before so wish me luck.
Cheers
Stuart.
BTW - What mark Would I get if I used the big belly tank and the Dog tooth wings on the F.3 - an F.6?

Yep - you could make an F2A or F6 that way (cannons are in different places but other than that and some minor details, I think they are the same). I did an F2A that way years back.Sir T wrote:

Cool - F.6 it is then as I have Spare Decals and some Redtops. Not sure how I'll add the belly guns but we'll look into that.
