125th Anniversary of the Birth of the 'Red Baron'
Hi,
I note from the new Revell releases that 2017 is the 125th Anniversary of the Birth of Manfred Von Richthofen.
This got me thinking should we have a GB/SB to 'celebrate' ??
This could run a couple of different ways.
1. A build solely concentrating on MVR and his Aircraft.
2. A build covering 'Aces' from any era as MVR is arguably the most well known Ace to this day.
As always any build would cover any kit in any scale.
For the MVR build any of the aircraft types he flew would be eligible. In a scheme that covers MVR's use of that aircraft.
For the aces build the subject needs to be an Aircraft and in the markings or scheme of the pilot one they had reached. 'Ace' status. So for example Douglas Baders Spitfire Va is ok but the Bulldog he crashed is not.
This build would cover all periods of aviation from WW1 to the presant day. So lots of choice.
Obviously given it's a historically based GB/SB no WHIF's etc required.
Let me know what you think.
Maybe it could run over an extended period to take the stress out and allow for complicated or multiple builds.
Cheers

I suppose I'd go for Any Ace.
I've done most of MvR's jobbies; don't want to do them again
But do it in April.

How about a 3rd option -- MvR or any of his victims ? For many there is sufficient data about markings.
I'd prefer, if Aces, that we stick with WW1.

This is one I'd go for. The link below would help here.jRatz wrote:How about a 3rd option -- MvR or any of his victims ? For many there is sufficient data about markings.

But I'd also add Brown's Camel AND a small dio of the Australian Machine gunner team as eligible builds too.

All the best.

Thanks for the interest.
My thoughts..
1. Time line will fall out of the discussion if anything runs at all.
2. An all inclusive Aces build naturally covers all the WW1 Aces so what would be the reason for limiting the scope???
3. Including the 'victims', Aussie machine gun crew et al starts to turn the GB into a bit of a WW1 aviation GB. Nothing wrong with that per se... but it's not what I had in mind...
So do we want to run a MVR GB of the Aircraft he flew.. Perhaps include Busts and figures all MVR related...
Or do we run an Aces GB celebrating aviation Aces WW1 to the present day??
I thought of the latter in the context of MVR as probably he is the most easily named fighter ace for most people.
But if the 'Aces' GB gets enough steam then I think it's called the Aces GB or WHY not MVR related...
Cheers

Re: 125th Anniversary of the Birth of the 'Red Baron'
When you proposed MvR and Fred mentioned April, as in 100th of Bloody April, this seemed to be a WW1 natural.Gadfly wrote: 2. An all inclusive Aces build naturally covers all the WW1 Aces so what would be the reason for limiting the scope???

I brought up 'victims' from a prior WW1 GB elsewhere, where we each modeled an Ace and one of his victims.
#2. Simply because the easy way out will be taken; is OK if that's what folks want, but my personal interest tanks, FWIW.
#3. See victims remark above; the Aussie MG team may be a stretch.
Unfortunately, April is problematic in that you are already GBL of the 109 STGB then.
This could open it up to vignettes -- pilot & dog standing by airplane, dragged from cockpit with head wound, etc -- and would be interesting. I don't have a firm handle on the aircraft count, but IIRC he only flew about 7-8 different types, so that is somewhat limiting, but I do not know how many differently marked aircraft of each type (nor how well documented all are).Gadfly wrote: So do we want to run a MVR GB of the Aircraft he flew.. Re: 125th Anniversary of the Birth of the 'Red Baron'
Ok so if we run with MVR as a theme.
Allow figures, Busts, Vignettes as well as aircraft he flew.
Possibly have an option for any of the types and schemes flown by Jagdgeschwader 1 (Flying Circus)
That keeps it WW1 centric.
I personally cannot moderate in April as the 109 GB is running then. He was born in May so perhaps then is an option.
If it's April and I can understand the Bloody April connection. Someone else might consider running it.
We should consider the Aces GB separately later in the year.
Cheers

Re: 125th Anniversary of the Birth of the 'Red Baron'
Sounds good.
April was just a thought, but since it is a MvR 125th B-day, May would be fine.
