Mistercraft Sukhoi Su-22m4R '77 JBG'

Post by iggie »

Having seen two of these beasts flying at this year's RIAT, I had been looking casually for one in 1/72 scale to have a bash at, and this is the result!

The boxart is bright and cheerful and vaguely reminiscent of Italeri boxes. The box itself is good and strong and well capable of being subjected to the weight of many stash items, which it'll need to be!

Parts have a limited run look and feel to them, although the detail is crisp and panel lines etc. nicely and finely engraved

The instructions are again familiar looking; Hobbyboss perhaps or Academy but clear and concise with excellent colour schemes for the different paint options, along with three separate decal sheets for the 3 options which are East German Airforce 1990 just prior to reunification, Polish 40th Fighter-Bomber Reg't 1992 and another German scheme, this time post reunification around 1994

All in all, a nice looking kit, of a meaty looking aircraft and available at reasonable cost!

That would be Academy. The Ventura I'm doing is a Mistercraft re boxed by them. The painting instructions are better though than Academy's. Looks a good kit. Might have to get one now. I'll decide over a few pints ;-)

That looks very much like a rough copy of the Bilek\Italeri offering. I have one in the stash but it looks like a bit of a challenge.

It is a brutal looking aircraft once built though.

Just checked my Italeri kit and breakdown and sprues are not the same, most likely a copy of the Pantera kit? Will be following this to see how it builds

I've got a couple of these in the stash of various versions/boxings. The molds are from Pantera and take a bit of elbow grease to get into shape but they do look good once finished. There are various AM parts floating around for the Su-17/20/22 series (a new seat is a must fit) but the kit decals are very good.

Yes, that's true - its a Pantera kit. Decals, who are made by MasterCraft are thin, and are good for fluid like Sol/Set or Mr.Setter. Their main disadvantage is white, and yellow colour. It's a little transparent.
