Revell Flower Class Corvette HMCS Snowberry 1/144 *New Tool*

Post by iggie »

This is the recently released 1/144 baby sister to the original Matchbox/Revell 1/72 Flower Class Corvette; a brand new tooling though and not a scaled down version.
I guess from a cost and display space viewpoint, this version will appeal to a lot of people who always wanted to build a Flower, but never had the money or space to do so :-D
That said, I have the 1/72 in the stash to build still, and a half built one awaiting a decision on it's future; it may go R/C for use as an escort vessel while on the canals of Great Britain :grin:

The box is the now normal end-opening flimsy affair that we have come to know and love from Revell; inside is a fair chunk of plastic; 9 grey sprues, 2 hull halves, a clear sprue and a reel of hairy cotton for rigging and guardrails.
The mouldings are (to my eye) a little inconsistent in terms of quality; some parts look wonderful, others a little soft and lacking in depth. However, I suspect it will build up into a lovely model OOB, and I bet there is already some AM detailing on the market for it already.

The instructions are in the new (and very nice) format; colour illustrations, colour coded paint call-outs (albeit still only Revell colours with the usual rash of paint alchemy required :shock: ), and a rigging diagram!

All in all, I would recommend this kit to those of a Naval bent based on what I can see in the box. I won't comment on accuracy (the 1/72 version being slated in some quarters for shape issues) but to me who was brought up on The Cruel Sea, it sure looks like an over-worked Corvette to me!

Looks interesting, and its always nice to see what you get in a box if you are someone who ponders and then sometimes makes impulse purchases. There seems to be quite a bit of detail and fiddly stuff as it is without asking for trouble with an etch set. Out of curiousity what are the sizing measurements they give for it please.

Hi Chris, the box gives the length as 49.5cm and 501 parts in total; as you say, plenty of parts to play with without resorting to PE!
Best wishes

Thanks for the quick look; I don't see it over here yet, but have it on my (very) short shopping list for the IPMS/USA National in a couple weeks (even though I have a closet full of Flowers from 1/48 to 1/700).

I realize that having the real thing available and/or some info inherited from Matchbox and with no ill-will to Canada, but I do wish they had chosen something other than Snowberry. I know of only one short f'c'sle offering, Iron Shipwrights 1/350 resin HMCS Sackville 1939, and I wish there were a few other options. I was hoping Mirage Hobby would go there with their line, but not so far. I guess another long f'c'sle is OK, even Canadian, just pick something other than Sackville for variety.

Agree the detail looks great but the flash and seam lines are surprised on such a new tool - maybe they've tried out a "cheaper" tool maker or use them according the estimated sales to make it more cost effective.

the moulding quality is surprising; it certainly isn't up to their other recent new-tools, and I wonder if they have subbed this one out to one of the limited run manufacturer's? That said, it is stamped Revell in several places....

@JR: 1/48th Flower? :shock: :shock:

1/48 HMCS Agassiz Flower, a short f'c'sle -- from Model Dockyard "over there". Fiberglass hull plus all the resin deck furniture & details; I supply the sheet & strip. I have the radio gear, motor, etc - but really haven't made much progress -- I've only had it about 15 years so it's relatively new.

Well there's no need to rush things after all is there! :grin:
That sounds a great kit but I'm not even going to try looking it up on the Internet in case I get tempted :shock: :-D

You may be in luck, depending ... I went here ( http://www.model-dockyard.com/; ) and do not see it offered, in fact their catalogue has shrunk alarmingly. Sad, I'll have to dig through my stuff to find the manufacturer and see if it is offered elsewhere.

OK, found my Model Dockyard stuff and really can see how the online catalog has shrunk, but here's what you need.

The hull comes from Fleetscale: http://www.fleetscale.com;

And the fittings packages come from Sirmar Fittings: http://www.sirmarfittings.com;

I have HMCS Agassiz, but they offer others.

I had one of the old Match box renderings and one of the Tamiya Blue Devil destroyers turned them both R/C. The Match box Flower class worked perfectly the Blue Devil destroyer lasted two days. :lol: :lol:
