Airfix F-51D Mustang 1/72 scale New Tooling

Post by Saxon »

x 72 pieces.

When I first saw the new Airfix P-51D, I was impressed but I have alot of built P-51's already so I passed, then I saw the F-51D and was going to pass again but being a sucker for small air forces and different camo schemes I had to have this as it comes with Dominican Republic Air Force markings and the aircraft is from 1984 so all in all it was just too much to resist.

So what you get is the P-51D with an additional sprue with rockets etc as the other marking option is a USAF Korean War bird, the kit as all of Airfix's new tools looks great as well. And the paint chart for this kit is also in colour something I love to see as sometimes various shades of grey can be confusing.

So onto the pics, box art

That looks like another winner for Airfix, have they corrected the elevator mass balances?

Thats a definate NO then  (OK it is easily fixed but that isn't the point it being a new tool and in all other respects a terrific model) and I will still buy several of these kits for the stash.

I really fancy getting this kit and replacing the old Italeri offering that I butchered for the Korean War GB.

What is the issue with the elevator mass balances & how can it be fixed?

O_T, The problem with the tailplanes is that they are not finished ! -the elevater is permanently fixed to the tailplane and were it real it simply could not move. I did contact Airfix about this and it has apparently been passed on to the appropriate department , however as the tool was then in use in China I won't hold my breath for the repair. It is effect (and in fact?) an unfinished tool that has been cleared for production and released to a contractor for use and as such this is unforgiveable. The fix is simple, all you have to do is finish engraving the mass balance onto each and every kit you build as Airfix should have done to the tool itself, however if you separate and droop the elevaters on your models as I do then it does not matter as this operation also fixes the problem. Dirk, I will build some as well !

I have just finished the Mustang IV which is the same kit minus the extra sprue with the prop/rockets and bombs.

I can highly recommend this kit, the fit is spot on with no need for filler. The panel lines are still just a tad to big, but if you paint with a hairy stick they will disappear and if you like me use an air brush they still look good with no need for a panel wash.

Stunning build Splash!
Now I want this F-51 kit, those Dominican markings look very attractive, I do fancy a Mustang in camo style.
Confused as always, and somewhere in hiding on the Scandinavian peninsula...

Having just picked up a couple of Mustang IV 'Starter kits' from ALDI (£4.99 each), so I googled a review and found this, so I am very happy. Using at least one for a 2016 group build.

To be honest the only panel lines you should see on the wing of a P51 are those for the gun bays, and maybe the wing tips. The rest were filled to help the laminar flow stay smooth. Superb kit however and one I enjoyed building.

All the best,

Greg
