Combrig 1/700 HMS Canada

Post by JamesPerrin »

This is a computer designed kit moulded in resin. I don't know how they make the master but I can't see it being 3D printing as the surfaces are completely smooth and some details are >0.1mm. The detail is superb, even planking inside the life boats.

The nondescript box just manages to contain the waterline hull and then there is a bag of resin and a sheet of PE. Instructions consist of some plans (though annoyingly not to 1/700 scale) parts and 4 stages of exploded diagrams. So locations appears vague on the planes but there are locating notches & grooves on the kit.

The kits measures about 28.5cm but the quoted 191m works out at 27.25cm, so summit went wrong somewhere. To be honest it doesn't matter a jot to me as this is probably the only ship I will build (famous last words) and the scale is irrelevant.

Note, even the pouring stubs have be computer designed as part of the masters.

That looks impressive James. How does the photoetch look? Very fiddly?

I expect they used a CNC milling machine to make the tooling.

Cheers

@Andrew, The some of the PE is very small, eg block and tackle for the crane but there is no complex folding stuff like radars.

@Paul, My great grandfather served on Canada during WWI, though after Jutland. I believe he operated one of the 6 pounders.

Ah - family connection. A great reason to build something. I have Italeri's 1/35 MTB kit for the same reason.

Combrig kits are good, getting better, and their attention to the pre- and WW1 era fill a tremendous gap in modeling.

Due to the subject matter, if you wish to do a different configuration, the references may be hard to find and tend to be expensive.

I know you'll do well with it, James, and now that the bug has bitten .... :)

I've collected quite a few photographs, but of course they are undated. I have my my great grandfather "official ship's photograph" but again this may have been taken when the ship was commissioned.

One thing I forgot to add is that there are no railings included. Fortunately I have an White Ensign HMS Dreadnought PE set from an aborted plan to scratchbuild Canada which has railings in it.

Railings? They didn't need railings in those days! Tough as nails, them Edwardians!

Wasn't the Canada orginally supposed to be a Chilian ship?

Yes, kept (bought) by the RN, then returned to Chile after WW1, to serve off & on until the late 50's .... interesting story ....
