Airfix NEW-TOOL Lancaster "Dambusters" **PHOTO HEAVY**

Post by JohnRatzenberger »

Arrived today.
Airfix 1/72
Kit A09007
Avro Lancaster B.III(Special) "The Dambusters"
US Price: $32 at Squadron.

I'll have pix tomorrow.

Wow!! Big box 18inx10inx2in, packed full of parts.
All parts in one big bag; clear parts in their own bag inside the big bag.

Decals for 2 aircraft AJ-T and AJ-E.

Lots of detail and some extra parts.
-- paddle and pointy props
-- H2S
-- all turrets & guns
-- detailed gear bays
-- flaps, detailed
-- detailed crew positions

The extra parts are obviously for other aircraft, although you get no extra ordnance to use with them.

The kit has "new-tool" panel lines, but more subdued than early new-tool kits, so I think they are getting a handle on that.

Without a detail inspection, and a build, I cannot say much more about it and I'm too busy to start that now, although I am excited about it.

I will, however, state that I hate the instruction booklet. See my, and other, comments in the new-tool Swordfish GB about too many steps with too few parts crammed onto a page with dark lines and markers and etc. I really hope they get a handle on this sometime.

Like I said, pix tomorrow.

How do the panel lines compare with the much-criticised Revell kit?

I only have the original release Revell #4300, do they have another one ? To compare, I will have to attempt to dig it out of the bottom of my closet where it has languished since I bought it ....

They brought out a new tool about 4-5 years ago. Dihedral is incorrect, amongst other things.

OK, that's the one I have, but it's still in the bottom left rear of the closet and requires me to remove a few feet of stuff to get at it.

Meanwhile, here we go.

Here's the box and a few details off the side panels.

Last but not least, the instruction booklet ....

110 steps for 265 parts - overkill. As you go through you will see steps to glue 2 parts, sometimes just one, a few none. Note the use of CAD drawings showing all sorts of irrelevant detail which just fogs the picture -- IMHO, if the detail isn't needed to correctly position a part, leave it off.

Instructions aside, I do want to build this ....

There's only one thing that lets it down. No crew figures! Will have to resort to another set of Revell flight crew when I get around to building mine then...

Not quite, there is a pilot - see bottom left of 3rd big sprue image and 1st instruction image .... I agree it is sad about the rest gone missing.

So there is, missed that. Poor chap all on his own. But it was a dangerous mission, so hardly surprising the others have already baled out...

Thanks, John!

Two things - 1. looks better detailed than the Hasegawa kit; love the bomb trolley and the decal map for the nav, and 2. the panel lines look OK and there appear to be few pin marks in places you might see them when the model is complete.

Looking good, Mr. Airfix!
