AMT Round2 Star Trek Cadet Series Motion Picture Set

Post by Dirkpitt289 »

The AMT Round 2 Cadet series is aptly named for its simplicity (very minor painting required, comprehensive decals and simple snap-fit assembly) and I believe these kits were designed to mainly cater to the beginner. But I believe that many seasoned builders will opt on getting these kits as well. Even though they are small in size (1/2500) they are quite detailed, and they all come in the same scale, giving them dimensions relative to their actual sizes if compared side by side.

In this kit "The Motion Picture" set it comes with the Enterprise Refit, The USS Reliant and the Klingon Ka'Tinga battlecruiser

The box for this kit is nicely detailed with glossy photos of the kits all over the box along with a little history and extra photos on the back of the box for references

First up the Enterprise Refit (10 Parts)

You'll notice that the saucer has no grid lines whatsoever but no need to worry. The decals will take care of that

Next up is the USS Reliant (11 Parts)

The Klingon Ka'Tinga (9 Parts)

I just love the detail to the hull and main bride on this kit.

Next the Decals

The instructions are a simple one page tri-fold sheet. Construction on one side and paint and decals on the flip side

In the end I believe these kits were were designed with beginner modelers in mind but they can be a challenge even for seasoned builders due to the decals. I would recommend that if you decided to try any of these kits that you have plenty of decal solution on hand. With a little care and persistence they can come out really nice. The other great think about these kits is they are small enough to be built into dioramas where as it would be difficult to do in the larger scales. The cost of this kit was just under $20 at Hobby Lobby which I think is a good price for thee kits but if you add the 40% coupon like I did it rings up at around $12. Now thats a deal.

The Pro's

The decals are exquisite

The scale allows for multiple builds and Dio opportunities.

The Cons

As exquisite as the decals are they can be a pain to work with.

The kits do NOT come with any stands
Thanks for taking the time to read this review and I hope it will encourage you to give them a try.

These kits come in around 3 inches or so. As you get into the later Enterprises they get larger and are really nice. For example the Enterprise E in this scale is somewhere around 8 inches I believe. I'll have to dig mine out to verify

Round 2 sell a nice simple stand as a separate item, but it sucks that none are included with the kits, it's not like any of them can stand up without one!

Yeah it seems silly to me that they don't include one or in the case of this kit three. However that will not keep me from buying and building several of these Cadet kits

Nice, But all I want is an AMT Romulan Warbird to build with one of my fibre-optic kits.
The best thing, is to keep on building. Clap your hands, stamp your feet, wiggle your fingers…
