Sword 1/72 EE Lightning T Mk 5

Post by splash »

English Electric Lightning T Mk 5. Scale: 1/72
Manufacturer: Sword Price: £15:00

Contents:
  • Two grey plastic sprue,
    One clear plastic sprue,
Three resin parts (2 ejection seats and a set of jet pipes,
    One sheet of PE
One set of decals with options for three a/c
    One detailed instruction booklet
At the same price as the Airfix new Lightning this kit looks like a bargain , the resin jet pipes are very fine and well detailed, the two resin ejection seats are basic but when the PE seat belts have been added they should look far better than most standard kits of this price.

When you take into account the included PE instrument panel the cockpit should good straight out of the box.

The grey plastic has fine engraved panel lines that might disappear if you use a hairy stick but should be ok if you use an airbrush.

I'm personally not a lover of the lightning and have not bought the new Airfix kit, but this kit looks to good to miss so it will move up my build list quite quickly, I think the biggest problem will be what colour to paint it as all three options look good :???:

The Airfix F2 is £14.99 and the soon to be released F6 is over £16 according to the Airfix website.

I have not built a Sword kit so I'm looking forward to this one.

I looked at these in Hannants tent at Duxford; then I got distracted by a bacon sarnie and forgot to go back
Never mind, I'll get one (or two  ) at RIAT :-D
Thanks for the review Splash, convinced me to go for them! 8-)
Best wishes

It looks like a really nice kit. I'm particularly impressed with the jetpipes.

Wow...... it's only $17.99 at the AirfixUSA website - that's a shade over 11 quid at current exchange rate....!

Purchased the T4 from a trader at the Salisbury Show. He was charging £12!

The models are beautifully moulded with all the aspects as described above. The only issues that were noticed by a Lightning expert was that the T4 model features the spine air inlet and the long cable duct of the T5 (they obviously use the same mould for both kits). The inlet needs to be removed and the cable ducting needs to be shortened for an accurate T4. Other than that the kit is fine.

Looking at the box art for the T5 above, I didn't realise the Lightning Training Flight was based at Alconbury. It was Binbrook, wasn't it?

I saw two at the weekend, but was too slow to snap them up. They do indeed look very nice. They will go with my super new Airfix kits.

Apparently this is 4mm under scale

Under scale is good it means you use up less storage space :-D
