Introducing myself
Introducing myself
Hi there.
I'm fairly new to modelling, but were inspired by seeing a chandelier using model aircraft on a different forum. (And Vickers Vandal's wonderful models on same forum). I saw everyone else's and I am in awe at the level of detail.
These days my eyesight is awful and I can barely see to put the decals on. I'm not going to attempt the flying wires on my Sopwith Camel unless anyone has an easy way of doing it.
My project is to turn my models into a mobile or something similar, and am working on this as a project with my 7 year old son. He builds cars with his dad, planes with me! So far we have done a Hurricane and a Spitfire and are working on a Mosquito, Spitfire and Messerschmitt. We put these to one side yesterday to concentrate on a Sopwith Camel.
I'm probably not going to be a very active member. I live in Melbourne.

Welcome aboard !
Don't worry about living in Melbourne - you don't have to travel to belong We've pretty much got someone here 24 hours, a fairly world-wide audience, if not leave a message ....
Are your eyesight issues something that cannot be adjusted for with magnifiers ? I had cataract surgery a year or so ago and had to start using cheap drug store reading glasses ....

Welcome to the forum. Hope you enjoy yourself here and have fun building with your son. It's good to get them modelling before the computer game disease takes hold.
I sympathise with the eyesight thing. Mine deteriorated a couple of years ago but a pair of prescription reading specs makes it possible to continue the hobby. Could you not get a dedicated pair of specs?

Re: Introducing myself
I've had poor eyesight since I was a child and have always had to use perscription glasses. It never stopped me modelling though. As I have got older, my eyesight has deteriorated (as it does for everyone) but the secret is -
get your eyes tested at least every two years
always have up to date perscription glasses for close and distance work
use magnification assistance when doing really close work - like building models.
I use a head magnifier, which has been exceptionally helpful.

Re: Introducing myself
New glasses are definitely on the cards! I've had glasses since I was a kid too, Eric.
I think I will still need to invest in a magnifying thingy that you hang around your neck. It might help me finish that embroidery I've had sitting there for the last 5 years.
Son has decided to build a car so his dad can help him. But he still comes back to mum for building the aircraft. Probably because we then search the 'net and learn all about it!
Thanks for the welcome!

Re: Introducing myself
Might I suggest getting a magnifying visor. They're available from 'tool shops' for less than you'd pay at an LMS. I paid less than £15gbp, and most come with assorted lenses that can combine for various magnifactions.
What time is it Eccles??
