Aboard USS Hornet at Alameda Naval Air Station, California

Post by Marek »

Guys,
back in December 2010, I went for the conference in San Francisco, Ca, which of course was less interesting than what I could spot around and especially in Alameda, Ca where the NAS Alameda Museum and USS Hornet are located. I was fortunate enough to enter aboard during repositioning of all exhibits onto carrier deck, because they were prepping up for the New Year's Eve Dance! What a blast, for a second I felt like during low rate carrier operations :). There is a LOT of pictures here, I will be willing to provide better quality for anyone wishing if needed.
Hope You enjoy!
Marek

Wow! Looks like you had a great time - some fantastic shots there. Flat tops are deceptively large; seeing those photos brings it home to me in a way that seeing a panoramic view of a ship never can. It must have been huge. I went on the HMS Belfast moored on the Thames, and that was big enough, but that's just a small ship - the Hornet must be massive!
Will write history dissertations for modelling supplies...

In terms of size, even though it's big, you wonder where the heck all people fit in :) when you're onboard.

Can't believe they had the avenger and FJ-3 below deck,
