Classic Fighters Omaka 2017 air show 15 April

Post by skypirate »

This venue is well-known worldwide as the Aviation Heritage Centre sponsored by Peter Jackson and responsible for WWI restorations and replicas.
For the airshow weekend, there are many visiting aircraft as well.
Here are a selection of pics from the show for your viewing pleasure.

Among others, I finally got to see that gorgeous, restored Anson Mk.1 in the flesh (and in the air), and also a restored DH Dove I wasn't expecting! Plus 3 Spitfires, 2 P-40s, 7 Fokker Triplane replicas, 6 Harvards, 2 Yak-3s, 2 DC-3s, Venom, RAAF C-27, RNZAF C-130, NH-90 and Seasprite helos, Corsair, Avenger and even a flying replica V-1 (attacked in the air by the Spitfire XIV, a la FROG!). All in the air and on the ground. The on-site WWI aviation museum is also World class. Also, an on-site car museum (1960s-1980s).

The Anson is not on fire, thank goodness; it was just making smoke for its flying display!

Image

The full-size V-1 is radio-controlled and landed safely!

Image

Three Spitfires including one 2-seater. The Mk.XIV has been rebuilt after a serious ground-loop many years ago (the perils of hopping from a Merlin-engined Spitfire into a Griffon-engined Spitfire! Opposite rudder trim required!)

Photos taken with my Olympus O-MD E-M5 DSLR micro four thirds camera.

The show is on again in 2019, at Easter.

Hope you like this sample!

Excellent pictures, how is it that the Harvard always is such a photogenic aircraft?

What powers the V1 and where can I get one? :-D :-D
Best wishes

Jim
If you can walk away from a landing, it's a good landing. If you use the airplane the next day, it's an outstanding landing

What a great looking show, David. An excellent selection of aircraft types and military vehicles including that great looking Panzer Mark 4 and WW I tank, plus that bonkers flying replica V-1 which has to be unique I would imagine!!
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

David

Thanks for those great pics. Tough to beat the Kiwis for restorations and great airshows IMHO.

Great pix, thanks for sharing.
The Anson is on my list to see flying.

The picture of the Avenger illustrates how much cockpit interior/color can be see on some of these from outside; also how thin the framing really should be.

It's my model and I'll do what I want with it.

I have just attended another airshow - "Wings over Illawarra" at Albion Park airport in NSW, home of HARS (Historic Aircraft Restoration Society).
So before I put up some of those pics, here are a few more from Omaka.

Below - ex-Swiss AF Venom representing Venom service with the RNZAF.

Image

Below - Sopwith Snipe

Image

Image

Below - Pratt and Whitney R2000-powered Yak-3. Ex-Reno racer, holder of several records.

Yikes!

Image

And this is an ex-Indian Air Force Spitfire XIV, so here's me wondering if this used to be one of the derelict Spitfires I used to sit in when I was a young teenager!

Cheers,

Some wonderful photographs on show here, would love to have attended these shows myself.
A start on my first kit a Hawker Hurricane as been made, a spitfire awaits in the wings and thinking about models to come.

Modelling space in shed coming along nicely.
