Around noon today a KC135 was shooting approaches at the former KI Sawyer AFB about 15 miles south of here. The outbound leg is over my house. Don't see the big iron like we used to. Think he was out of the Air National Guard unit in Milwaukee, WI. Last week one came in with apparent hydrallic issues but made a safe landing, made repairs and scooted for home.

3 X UH-60, 5 X AH-64 and 3 X CH-47, in the pattern for the airport. Ran out to get a few pics but they weren't parked in conducive positions. I took a few through the fence with a long lens - I'll post a few more later, but here's a sample.

No snow in Flag, Jeff! Very unusual for this time of year.....

Anyways, I was minding my own business, watching the dull WHU/MU game, when the house started shaking with chopper action - the US Army was flying downwind into Flag airport right over my house! Needless to say, I didn't have my camera to hand, but ran over to the airport to get a few shots though the fence.

A total of 5 X AH-64, including a Longbow Apache, 3 X CH-47 and 3 X UH-60. I couldn't see the '60s at the airport, and the others were not positioned conducive to good photography (away on the ramp, behind hangars, a 10ft fence and sun directly against...). Still, a few shots of record:

Note the name painted on one of the Apaches, and the severe weathering on one of the Chinooks. No idea where they were coming from or going to - the gc were too busy for me to want to interrupt them - but they left after refueling about an hour later.

We had an old Bell model 47 fly over the house yesterday whilst I was out digging in the garden. The sound was significantly different from modern helos.

I personally think they have gone overboard with the weathering on that Chinook :-D especially the oil running down the front

Here in Somerset I have had a lot of RN Westland Wildcats fly past my house, I live on the flight path from Yeovilton to Merryfield (satellite training a/f for Yeovilton).

I cant put my finger on it, but the Wildcat sounds quite different from the Lynx

The Chinook IS a flying oil leak.
What is unusual about the one Paul photo'd is that it is not parked in a giant drip pan.

The good old Wessex Helicopter was the same.

You could always tell a Wessex Aircrewman,as they always had oil on their flying suits as the Wessex main gearbox used to drip on the crew seat. We used to say if a Wessex did not leak it must be out of oil :-D

Spotted what looked like an all-yellow Hawker Hunter heading over York the other day. Interestingly, googling brings up only one yellow Hunter, which lives in Cape Town...

What just flew over?

Post by Brickie »

I couldn't find the original thread for this so...

I just saw a V-22 Osprey southbound over York. Most unusual.
