Great pics Dirk, interesting the diesel engine seems to be up side down, i.e crank is above the pistons. is that a normal arrangement for sea going diesels?

Cheers

I have a sad update to this boat. Back in 2016 the grandson to the man who brokered the deal to bring the USS Ling to Hackensack as a memorial and museum to those that served in the Submarine service terminated the museums lease. The land has been sold to a developer that is going to build riverfront apartments.

The museum and submarine have been closed to the public since 2012, when Superstorm Sandy washed away the gangplank that gave visitors access to the vessel. Then, in 2018, the Ling was flooded with 10 feet of river water when a group of "urban explorers" (AKA Vandals/ hooligans) allegedly broke into the vessel and pried opened its hatches. The brackish floodwater damaged priceless artifacts, including 35 fully furnished bunks, uniforms, radio equipment, gyroscopes and navigation equipment.

Over the years there have been some groups that have wanted to save the sub but because of the silt levels in the water and the subs deteriorating hull and bridges that were built that now block the waterway it looks like the submarines fate has been sealed.

Its sad to see this artifact get erased from history but at least my sons and I got to visit it multiple times over the years and even got to sleep on board and feel what it was like to be a submariner during WWII

Sad end for a vessel that was in such good shape.
