So, to break out of my rut and try to regain a little of my Mojo, I decided to 'blitz' the new Airfix JP3 over the weekend - a simple kit, single colour scheme; what could go wrong? Turns out the decals I have are thick, brittle and unresponsive to the harshest decal softener known to man! Very un-Airfix-like. Here's where its at:

I started with the tip tank and wing stripes, but they quickly revealed themselves as very brittle and broke apart very easily. I don't really want to re-paint and do the other scheme, nor buy an aftermarket set for what is supposed to be a quick and simple build. Does anyone have a spare set of their XM413 decals left over from their build that they'd be willing to send me, please? I'll refund your postage.

Cheers!

Paul

I had the same problem, Paul. Migrant has done one and used hot water to get his to bend. I just cut them into 3 strips on the wing. I applied them top and bottom leaving the leading edge free. I gave it two coats of primer white and finished off with Xtracolor X253 RAL2005 Leuchtorange, which is a nice match for the decal.

I cracked a lot of decals getting it right, but had two kits, so I just replaced them with spares. The tip tanks were a total loss, regardless of hot water, so I'm painting them. I'll see what I have left over and get back to you. It's not a full set.

I've had a lot of trouble with this colour, as applied by decal. Very thick and brittle. The Matchbox Provost Decals were fine, though maybe a bit less bright.

Progress to date.

Many thanks, I appreciate it!

I was soaking them in hot water - doesn't seem to have helped, though I'll try again with some other areas. I fear that these particular decals are a bad batch; I hope I can get some that work properly!

Hi Paul,

I have just seen this post. I built mine with markings from the gorgeous Xtradecal sheet and simply tossed the Airfix dayglo stripes after reading the horror stories here. But I have a few kits, and if you need a complete set of Airfix dayglo stripes to do battle with (and serials for XM413), let me know.

cheers,

David

Ian, the decals arrived safely last night - many thanks! 8-)

Cheers, David - I'll see how it goes this second time around and let you know.
