RIP Polly S

Post by Blue Elephant »

Having been reading often of the great uses for Polly S Plastic Prep, esp. prior to using Alclad, I was disappointed to learn it's been discontinued. First Future/Kleer, and now this? What do other modellers use for preparing their models for painting?

Simple rattle-can primers, Tamiya is a good one, but also many of the automotive or DIY stores brands give a very fine prep coat.. You can get black, but (what little of that I do) I tend to like Tamiya Semi-Gloss Black TS-29.

Thanks John R, looking back I see that I wasn't specific enough in my original post about Polly S Plastic Prep(dec.). I was referring to its properties to assist in removing mold-release agent, oil from sweaty fingers and its antistatic qualities. I understood from reading the label on a bottle (a photo thereof)that it was supposed to be applied to be applied to a model before applying a primer, esp. if the ultimate goal was applying a Pre-Alclad primer. I use Vallejo and Tamiya (white) primers but still have problems with shiny spots showing through...................Perhaps, I should have asked how do modellers prepare the model surfaces prior to a primer coat? My bad!

Oh, I should have picked up on that, really.
Well then many of us (me, specifically) simply use a mild dish soap in warm water, a soft toothbrush for "scrubbing", rinse and let dry.
My choice (over here) is Dawn Dish Detergent.
Not sure about anti-static, I've not had that problem.

OH, BTW, along with the Prep, we've lost their excellent line of acrylic paints.
Say thanks to your friendly Testor's rep for all that ...

I miss their acrylic paints. They were some of the best I have used.

Thanks guys, that sounds like a cheaper way out of my dilemma..........just pinch some of the wife's dishwashing liquid...but as I am the designated dishwasher in the house (we agreed, I DON'T cook but I WILL wash the dishes),it shouldn't be too hard to manage :)

Apart from a good wash, which is mainly to get rid of sanding residue. I have occasionally wiped the surface over with IPA to get rid of any grease usually if I need to spray onto bare plastic.

I sometimes do a soap/water wash before building, but not usually, since I'll be depositing so much other crud on the surface during building. I don't do a water wash post-building either, because it could mess up too many things; but I do a thorough IPA wipe down before priming.

Please see the Modelling Glossary ... and IPA being a "good beer" is debatable ...

Ha, I had no idea my joke was preempted by the glossary.
