Home-made Super Glue Accelerator

Post by Stuart »

Hi Guys,

Ages ago – someone on here suggested a way of making a home-made super-glue accelerator using (I think) Bicarb of soda or Baking Powder…

Can’t remember who it was though or where I read it.

Any Ideas?

Cheers

Stuart

It's Bicarb you need for this Stuart.

Hi Andrew, so how do you use it, do you just mix it in powder form to the super glue ?

I find plain alcohol really speeds things up. I dug into CA accellerators at some point in time, and found they were often based on nothing more spectacular than alcohol or acetone (I think, in any case it was something that could do a number on any paint present). I tested with 70% "spiritus ketonatus", basically cleaning alcohol, and it turned rather slow CA into instant setting; so fast in fact that I had an issue with the brush used to apply the alcohol getting stuck  I've since obtained a small vapouriser intented for perfume and such, and use a good blast from that to hurry things up.
Of course, one does have to be a bit careful with anything that might be sensitive to alcohol, like some acrylic paints,..

Agreed. It would be handy to know the mixing ratio. My biggest issue with commercial accelerators is their toxicity level. A nice non-toxic, environmentally friendly, odourless alternative would be a big help.

Hi, this is the information that Andrew kindly sent me,
Dissolve a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) in half a cup of water. Try it out on a test rig first. Wet a cocktail stick with the solution and touch the CA glue. If it foams up, the solution is too strong, so dilute it.
hope this helps.
