Vallejo Primer

Post by SteveC »

Hello All,

If I understand correctly, if you thin primer it just becomes paint, so as I have been having trouble with my Vallejo Primer, can you add flow enhancer instead?

Regards,

Steve

What sort of trouble?
Vallejo Primer is polyurethane and tends to peel off when sanded or when sprayed on bendy plastic figures - or do you have a different problem :ha:

The problem is just that it constantly dries on the needle and clogs up the airbrush. I try to use it only on monotone schemes where masking isn't really a problem.

I was watching someone build a kit on you tube and he said that if you thin primer it just becomes paint, so I was seeing if I perhaps can adjust how I airbrush it in someway without affecting its primer qualities.

I use Vallejo Acrylic 74600 White Polyurethane Surface Primer, Vallejo Acrylic 74601 Grey Polyurethane Surface Primer, Vallejo Acrylic 74602 Polyurethane Surface Black Primer and Vallejo Acrylic 74604 Polyurethane Surface German Dark Yellow RAL7028, and have never had to thin any of them. Maybe you're air pressure is too high.

Thanks for clarifying that.

I didn't realise that the problem would be having the air pressure too high, I thought the opposite.

I use their polyurethane and normal non poly primer and spray about 30 psi with no problems and no thinning. I do only use it on my .5mm needle though

I've had no problem spraying it, just turn the pressure down and I add one or two drops of Testors airbrush thinner. I always leave it to dry a fair bit longer as it appears dry but with a rubbery texture. In fact the only issue I have is that no-one local sells Vallejo....
