Post by harrybennett »

There is a gap between my fuselage pieces. Does anyone know what type of filler is the best to use

Depends on the size of the gap that needs filling really.

If you post a pic of the gap and we may be able to give the best solution to the problem.

For small gaps, just use some model filler and sand back when fully dry.

For larger gaps you would be better using a shim of plastic card and glue it into place. Then use some model filler around the gap again waiting for the filler to dry fully , then sand back to shape.

I'd first want to figure out how I got a "couple millimeters" gap and see if I had done something wrong, and correct that to get the gap down.

What Falcon said -- show pictures so we can give the best answers; and his two subsequent comments are the usual way to deal with the problem.

But a couple millimeters seems extreme ...

Sometimes the cockpit or other pieces need trimming to stop them pressing out the fuselage halves - always dry fit, (without glue), first. Tamiya filler gets my vote, a tube lasts a while and you can clean up excess with acetone to avoid too much sanding.

You could use Superglue mixed with talc as a filler. It is a bit of a trial and error method however.

Find some spare plastic...stuff from a margharine tub, or transparent plastic from packaging will do.
Slice it into strips and slide the strips into the gap.
Add glue.
Let it all set hard.
Sand off the excess plastic/glue.

Job done.

I hope these photos help put all the instructions into perspective

Image

in the case of my B-17 I put the wings at what I thought was the correct angle. Now I know what size gap I need to fill.
Image

Here is what I used o fill the gap where the wing meets the fuselage.

Once everything is set and the glue is dried I trim off all the excess plastic and use filler on the rest.

As you can see here if you squint just right the gap is gone.

I hope this helps. Press on with pride :-D
