I want to build an F-100, but what puts me off is trying to get the burnt metal effect on the rear fuselage. Does anyone have any tips for trying to get this difficult effect?

The F100 really burns it tail section.
For this one I streaked dark blue and Tamiya Smoke with a fine brush, in a light flick of the brush, a wee bit like dry brushing. I went around the fuselage, not length-wise.
I then went over it all with a brush wetted with methylated spirits. Both the blue and smoke being acrylic softened and merged together



Same technique for the F104

Maybe a little touch of tamiya clear blue here & there?

Yep, I'd agree with that, especially if you apply the clear blue onto a shiny metallic finish, and then blend in some Tamiya Smoke on top of the blue

Clear blue might be better than the solid blue I used, but I didn't know of the clear blue when I did those

Take a look at photos of F-100 aircraft on Google Images. The discolouration of the tail section depends upon how much time the aircraft has spent in afterburner. Some machines show heavy discolouration, some considerably less. From the many photos I've studied, a number of colours are exhibited with blue being just one and not the most prominent at that.
