Paint Match Table Test

RAF Colours 1938-45
ColourPaintScale ContributorReference Picture

Can't do the editing on the ipod, the cursor point gets in the wrong place...

Idea being to tell the world what paint you use for, say, Ocean Grey, who you are, what scale you used it in and a URL for a picture of a build using that colour.

We invite contributions and add stuff to the tables regularly.

That way we have an easy look up set of tables.

Not planning on involving FS or BS numbers in this, just what works for you... :)

This could be useful.
I've got a Colour Matching category of questions from Finishing Tips...best SEA camo, best RAF Brwon/Green camo, etc..

A potentially useful idea. It would probably need to be sub-divided into different colours - greens, greys, etc.

Yes I suspect there's a lot of stuff in the hints and tips which could be displayed in tables. If you find any more, I don't mind knocking out some tables, I have some software to help with the formatting.

If we did paint colours RAF, Luftwaffe, USAAF and USN aircraft from WW2, I bet we'd cover a lot of potential interest.

Then a section on NMF...

That would be Bronwen the Brown :)

I was thinking of grouping them as Temperate Fighter Scheme etc, but we could do a list grouped by colours.

For newcomers, the former would probably be better - find the tins of Humbrol they need to paint their Hurricane or whatever. By colour would be better for those who know what the colours in the schemes are and just need a paint name or number.

Once we have the table in a spreadsheet, generating either or both isn't a problem. I have in mind writing an excel macro to export a bbcode table.

Here's my list of RAF Colours 1938-45

This is what I propose to start the colour matches on, when I get the table formatting sorted a bit better.
Alphabetical order. I may have missed some, so please take a look and tell me. If you have a favourite paint or paint mix to do the job, then send me that too, with a URL to a build using that colour.

I question the effort involved when the probably the most popularly used paint charts are available on IPMS Stockholm.

It's here on this site, and it will have a link to picture so people can see if they like the result. It's meant to be a quick reference of what works, not the full FS number matching etc.

And lots of people ask here, rather than go to IPMS Stockholm, which does not cover all paint types anyhow.

cheers

...And IPMS Stockholm is not, but not 100% accurate or up to date.

Andrew...if you'd slow down a tad, I'd be able to sort out the Tips FAQ and get it to you. There's a whole bunch of 'the correct Humbrol paint for...type questions and responses.

Oh I'm nowhere near getting this going. I'm still writing an Excel to BBCode macro.

Thanks for doing all the collation of the hints and tips. Big job!

We want people coming to this site for useful information, not going off to other sites. And we have lots of useful information :)

There's a lot of dubious info in the IPMS Stockholm charts regarding Tamiya colours. Some of the equivalents suggested are bizarre.

I know. :frown: I came a total cropper with the Ocean Grey/Medium Sea Grey recommendations - they seem to be reversed and not particularly good

I've used the Tamiya RAF colours - they're very good, which is no surprise really as they introduced them for their flagship 1/32 Spitfires. Still no RAF interior green though.

Send me a URL of a piccie of the build and I'll roll out the project in the next couple of days.
