Advice or tips for painting propeller tips!

Post by aeroplanegripper »

Hello all,
Could anyone advise on how they paint their propeller tips, normally yellow in colour for Allied WWII a/c.
I have heard from dipping the tips into paint straight from the tin, dipping paint onto an eraser then dipping the prop tip on it, to spraying the tips then masking off to paint the black.
As I work only on 1/72nd I find spraying yellow for one prop quite wasteful.
I have tried all ways but never seem to get a uniform coverage.
I would be grateful if anyone had advice and what they prefered.
Best Regards

Mark

So do I so I just brush paint instead. Yellow, mask then black.

IIRC the AMO required 4" tips :-|

Anyway...moving swiftly on... ...Like James, I paint my tips yellow and then add the black. If I want real precision, I'll cut a strip of tape to the right depth/width and apply this to each dried tip and then add the black.

I have completed the Mk. II Spitfire and a Mustang (1/72). What I did for the tips was to paint the blades first and then using a 50 (00000) size brush got quite a passabe result.
What time is it Eccles??

Ratch is correct on the 4" band. I have used the "dipping" methods with good results. But to prevent a curved line, make sure you have enough paint poured in the lid .

I spray the tips with Vallejo Air yellow, so I just use a few drops of that, neat from the bottle. There's very little wastage. To get good coverage I prime with Vallejo sand primer first.
Once the yellow's on and given plenty of time to dry, then I mask and spray the blades black.

Cheers

I spray the entire propellor matt white first. This gives a good base for the yellow. Then, when dry, spray the entire propellor yellow.

Using a SAM scale scribing template (which has a handy scale ruler) and a dividers, I measure out the correct width of the yellow tip and then mask the tip with tiny strips of Tamiya tape.

I then spray the propellor (usually) Tamiya NATO black, which I find less harsh than normal matt black.

I don't find the use of yellow too excessive - certainly no more than if I brush painted.
