I usually cover the whole airframe with brushed on Future (I can never get a smooth finish with it using the airbrush and brushing it is very easy) and then overcoat the whole airframe after decalling with satin or matte as needed.
If you put Future one ONLY the areas were the decals go - e.g. just the outer part of a wing, when you put the top coat on over the decals, can you see a difference in the finish or colour between where you did put Future and where you did not?

No you can't see the difference.I put a couple of coats of Vallejo Matt varnish on, which brings everything down to the same matt finish, and then satin or gloss to bring it back up to a shiny finish if required.

My experience is contrary to Andrew's; I do see a difference in tone, especially in green/green or green/brown camo or plain colours.

Its not just how good your painting is, its how good the touch-ups are too.

I do on occasion. I think it has a lot to do with your final coat, to be honest.

Yes, you can.dwomby wrote:If you put Future one ONLY the areas were the decals go - e.g. just the outer part of a wing, when you put the top coat on over the decals, can you see a difference in the finish or colour between where you did put Future and where you did not?
The Future/Klear darkens the paint. So adding matt on top will show a difference in color. Adding many matt coats might help though, but you may not always get it down to same tone/color.
I find it easier to gloss coat the entire plane, for protecting the paint when decalling, then matt on top of that. Everything will have the same tone and no need to worry about any difference in color.

I don't see any difference, but I do tend to coat the whole airframe

Depends how matt/smooth the base paint is. If it's particularly rough then Klear will help level it where is is used and your will notice slightly shiner areas.

I think I'll have to experiment.
