Masking Tape residue

Post by andy519005 »

Hello

I have an issue where two colours are adjoining. I paint the whole area, then mask on the line between two colours.
But when I remove the tape ther looks like a residue left on the painted surface. Not sure if its from the tape adhesive, or was the paint too soft & the tape has actually imprinted itself in the paint?
Dont want to try anything drastic like thinners to remove residue in case it lifts paint

I use Tamiya tape & acrylics

Thx

Residue from Tamiya tape itself is rare, so I suspect paint.

You did not say which color left residue, although it sounds like the base color - this means it isn't bleed under of the second color.

It might be insufficiently cured paint, but often that just lifts off with the tape. If the paint was "too soft" that sounds like it is way too thick or was applied too thick.

When faced with similar issues - build up on the mask line, etc - I let it dry thoroughly then sand it down with a very fine snading stick or cloth. Then repaint/touch-up that area if needed - sometimes it will not be.

Remember, if there's a paint issue as you describe, then lifting off paint with thinner is the least of your problems.

WD40 will remove tape residue. Just a little on a cotton wool bud (Q-tip) should do it. Rub gently.

This is also a good way of putting a shine on your canopy.
