Magnification on iPhone

Post by JohnRatzenberger »

Got the IOS 14.2 update to my iPhone and it has a new "Magnifier" app. It uses the camera, but seems to be much better.

Fire up the app, find something in the instructions or on the model. There are a few controls for zoom, brightness, etc, not many. You can click the big center button and it takes a "snapshot", which you can send, but doesn't appear to save it in your photo libraries. I am not sure how much of this is hardware vs software processing; it' very clean.

By (very) rough measurement, it would appear that a 3/16" line is about 1/8" long on zoom-out (not quite full size) and 2" long on full zoom-in (about 10x).

It appears to be much clearer, and much easier to manage, than trying to do same with the camera. I only found it when trying to read some measurements in my Airwaves Gannet instructions. It's now one of my "great help" tools - good for checking a model for flaws, a reference for unclear details, etc.

It's my model and I'll do what I want with it.

Cheers for the heads up, I hadn’t spotted that update.
