Desert base

Any tips for making a base for a Western Desert dio? It's in 1/48, so I don't know if actual sand or a textured, painted finish would be best?

A lot of the western desert was rock not sand- all I can suggest is look at photographs of the period
currently on the go: Revell Blenheim I, Italeri Me210, Revell HMS victory, Revell 1/144 p-47
