Hasegawa P40E in 1:48 scale **UPDATED DECEMBER 2014***

Post by Softscience »

SCROLL DOWN -way down.

It has been a little while since I posted any finished work so here is my latest. This is Hasegawa's P-40E/K kit. I used the kit decals to build a plane flown by Robert Scott during the summer of 1942, and they performed flawlessly.

I added some Eduard PE belts and drilled out the exhausts. Otherwise all you see is right out of the box.

The kit was primed with black auto body primer and painted with MM Acrylic Neutral Gray and a few shades of Tamiya Olive Drab lightened with yellow, desert sand, flesh and whatever else I needed to get the sun-faded shades I wanted. Interior and detail painting was with MM enamels.

Paint chips were done with white and silver colored pencils, and powdered pastels were used for exhaust and wheel staining. Oil stains and streaks are colored pencil.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable build and I recommend the kit wholeheartedly.

Excellent work! The light weathering suits it really well.
I've said it a dozen times but I really should get one in 1/72, haven't built a Kittyhawk since I first started the hobby.

Holy Schmolies, Ralph. That is truly a great looking build.

Well Done!

Yuck, I just looked at the thread on a different computer. I didn't realize my photos were so dark! I really need to get a second lamp for my photographs

I wouldn't worry, Ralph. I think we're all in the same boat at this time of year.

Major overhaul!!!

I built this kit nearly two years ago and was not happy about how dull it looked on my shelves. Earlier this year a nice set of Barracudacals Aleutian Tiger decals came to me, so I decided to strip the model and give it a second go. I painted it with lighter tones of olive drab, applied to colorful decals, and weathered it a little differently than I normally do. Finally I added some EZ Line antenna wires (Thanks James, its a gift that keeps on giving), to give it that extra touch of realism. I'm very pleased with the upgrade and think I'll do the same with some of my other ho-hum older models.

Looks even better with that big Tiger on the nose Ralph. Which kit are you thinking of re-booting next?

Good question Tom. I'm thinking possibly the Italeri Hurricane I or Accurate Miniatures IL-2. I'm not thrilled by how either came out. Much the same, I'll probably pick up the new Airfix Hurricane in 48th when it comes out next year, so I may try doing something different with the Italeri kit (sea hurricane conversion?). The prospect of wrestling with the Sturmovik again is feels like a chore too. So maybe I wont be doing this again anytime soon :)
