Trumpeter's 1/48th Westland Wyvern.
This has been sitting there on the shelf for about 12 months. It really is a brilliant kit and the detail is excellent.
Here we are with the hairy stick that I use to cover these large areas of Sky.
Halfords grey primer gives a super base and you can just dust it on.
This shows the first thinned coat of Xtracolour RAF Sky. You just need to get the paint nice and runny.
Don't mess about, just get the paint on and work from left to right. ( Left handed painters can do it the other way )
If you have the right amount of thinning, it won't pick up as you paint over. Here is the under side. Don't worry that it doesn't cover fully.
I usually leave 24 hours before the next coat to allow the paint to harden off and then use another coat of the same thinned paint to complete.
This is a shot along the fuselage to show just how nicely Xtracolour goes on. This is still the first coat. I'll add Dark Sea Grey later.
I like the way that the fuselage gives the impression of pressed out panels. I really like this kit. I have it's little brother too, in 1/72nd.
My only problem was deciding whether to fold the wings or not. Maybe I'll get another.

You're getting a great finish with the old brush!

I love painting these kits with Xtracolour, James. A coat of primer makes all the difference.
Here is coat No 2.
And a single coat of Humbrol Authentic Colour DSG from 30 years ago is enough for the top side. By using a single coat I'm hoping for a slightly faded look.
This is an impressive aeroplane and a super kit. I actually masked the upper demarcation line.
And now the decals. These are a little bit brittle, so be careful. Also, make sure that you cut the slots out a little wider. You can touch in later.
Colours touched up.

Yep. All enamels. Sky from Xtracolour, used thinned over Halfords Primer. Dark Sea Grey from Humbrol Authentics.
So many models, so little time.

That is looking very tasty. What a beastie the Wyvern is.

Moving along with the Wyvern.
One of the fuel tanks. I'm very impressed with the Xtracolour paint, especially Sky.
I like separate wheel hubs too. So easy to paint.
One of the decals cracked apart when fitting and looked awful even after parching. It was replaced with a Modeldecal spare.
That's about it for the Wyvern. Brilliant kit. Trumpeter at their best. If I'd been a little more careful with the decals, it would have needed no spares. The wing roundel will show the stripes, so don't forget to put an extra white disk under your decal. The kit features a set of gears to allow you to spin those contra props. It will need some careful work, but all the stuff you need for various options on the assembly are there. It would be quite impressive. I may add a bit of weathering at some point, but need to test out the new Humbrol Washes on a test model first. I've just found the missing decal from the fin and will add that later, along with a couple more stencils.

Re: Trumpeter's 1/48th Westland Wyvern.
Thanks for the kind comments chaps. I must say that the model gives no problems at all, though the instructions could be improved, especially on flap placement and painting of detailed parts. My tins of paint worked superbly too. I'm nearly out of Sky though and will need to place an order soon.
So many models, so little time.

That aircraft always looks cool to me, and your finish on it is just great.
