It was a beast of an aeroplane by all accounts. Very impressive and as big as an Avenger. The whole British aircraft industry was in ferment in the 50's and there were more experimental types appearing than we could ever use. Those that got production orders were rushed into service way to fast and they suffered their teething troubles while in use. The Wyvern suffered it's fair share of troubles and had a very short service life, seeing action in the Suez Crisis and then vanishing forever. I think it still holds the title for the aircraft from which a pilot made the only underwater ejection. It lost power taking off from a carrier and ended up being run down by the bows of the ship it had just taken off from. Their was little chance of survival, so the pilot ejected and lived to tell the tale. Zero-Zero seats are quite common these days, but this must have been something of a one-off.
