BAE Hawk; Airfix 1/72
BAE Hawk; Airfix 1/72
I bought this one in a charity shop for £5. I thought it might make a change from hours of sanding, cutting and filling. I did not bargain for the hours needed to apply the 80 or more decal,s not to mention getting the red and blue paintwork right (the white stripes are decals).

Lovely!
I have this one to build one day, and was wondering how the painting/decal arrangement worked......old fashioned trial and error I guess!

If you can walk away from a landing, it's a good landing. If you use the airplane the next day, it's an outstanding landing

That is fantastic. And far beyond anything I would even dream of trying!

Lovely work, well done with the masking.
Re: BAE Hawk; Airfix 1/72
No masking involved. As I said, the red and blue are hand painted. The white areas are decals. The only trick is to paint the red and blue areas to the right shape and size so that the white decals cover where they join (or almost join). In practice, that was quite difficult. There were several places where I laid down the white decal, but immediately had to remove it and put it back in water until I had painted the red and blue correctly. I
If I were a slide rule modeller, I would have photocopied the decal sheet, cut out the white areas, laid them on the model to get the right shapes and areas, painted them, then applied the decals. But I'm not, so I just blundered my way through as usual.
If I were an airbrush user, I would have sprayed the whole thing white, masked and sprayed red, then masked again and sprayed blue. But I brush paint so did it by trial and error.

Well the outcome is all the better given that you winged it as such. It's a beauty.vacant wrote:No masking involved. As I said, the red and blue are hand painted. The white areas are decals. Brilliant. And a great picture.
