FROG Spitfire VIII / IXc

I saw a few of these finished as Mk VIIIs on this very thread and, as these looked great, I was inspired to try one for myself (I had never built one before). So, here it is. OOB (including decals) except for the rudder, which I filched from an Italeri MkIX.

I didn't touch the interior as I (correctly) surmised that nothing would be visible through the rather thick transparency. If I built it again, I would slim down the rear fuselage, add the wing fillet gull wing shape, try to scribe panel lines, add some detail to the interior, and replace the canopy.

Got it in one! This aircraft was the personal mount of Prince Emanuel Galitzine during Operation Dragoon. I found a photo of this aircraft in the IWM files, and it seems that FROG got their research pretty much spot on for this aircraft (OK, it appeared to be carrying the cylindrical under fuselage tank rather than the flush mounted one, but what the hey).

I plan to send you some more bits for Classic Plastic soon.

I have done one of these as well, wheels-up on a stand, finished in Hasegawa Mk VIII SEAC markings.

It's a classic "in the eyes of the beholder" question, isn't it.

I have seen these made up by others oob that look great; however, to me, the lack of dihedral (if indeed that wasn't just an isolated issue) would stick out like a sore thumb. I have another of these and vague plans to go to town on it, reducing the thickness of the wings and rear fuselage / fin, adding a cockpit, replacing the canopy, rescribing . . . . However, perhaps my time would be more profitably spent on trying to get the best out of one of the new AZ Spits? Don't know. But I do know there is no "right" answer for everyone!
