Curtiss C-46 1/72 Williams Brothers *Finished*
The one and only 1/72 C-46, and one rarely seen built up on model tables. I just finished this and I'm sorry for not posting it as a WIP. I wish I had, but I didn't. So, this will be 'what I did' rather than 'what I'm doing'.
Not a light twin by any means. That's a DH Heron fuselage in there with room to spare.
My version had a different elevator than the kit provided, so I chopped it up thusly, then realized that the leading edge wasn't different after all so had to glue it back on and clean up the mess.
the drawing is of the kit stab and shows the inceased elevator
size.
No locating pins, so I used tabs as though it were a vac.
The IP decal and control columns are kit provided. I made up the various levers, knobs, wheels, and the hot air vents. I like the hot air vents. Note too that the cockpit transparency half is already in place.
Now this is just bizaare. No, not the wedge shaped opening (Although that is odd). See the 'blocky rectangular shape just at the right of that slot? That's not me spacing out...that's molded on as part of the lower nacelle half. It's like that on both sides, both nacelles. Like they didn't finish the masters before they cut the molds.
Plastic and filler to round it out.
Then there's this little indiscretion. Thin strip of plastic with filler to finish it off.
Tail wheen was cut from the forks to be replaced with one from spares.
Nice wing/fuselage fit on top...underneath, not so much. Extreme caution used with the windscreen centerline seam. Nice transparencies...good fit and very clear.
Big step. I used filler, but some have built it up with sheet styrene. Note that the gear bay opening has to be cut out of the Nacelles. It's well marked though so not a problem..
Anyway...on the gear at last and ready for paint and decals. .

Re: Curtiss C-46 1/72 Williams Brothers
The decals are from Draw Decals http://www.drawdecal.com/store/; and performed very well.
I was concerned that the yellow stars might be transparent, but DRAW undercoated everything with white...no problem.
Cowl flaps on top of the nacelle are non-standard. The other plane provided for on the decal "Maid in Japan" has them on the bottom like 'most everyone else.
Fortunately there are lots of photos of both 'Dumbo' and 'Maid in Japan' on the internet. Fortunately, because there are a number of differences between the two (like the cowl flaps, placement of the main company titles, eyebrow windows, right-side cargo door, etc).
Yes, you can see inside, but you have to work at it.
Lastly, a couple on the ramp at Fairbanks Int'l

AWESOME, I have one of these in the stash. I hope mine gets somewhere near as nice as yours when I build it.
All the best.

Beautiful!
Sometimes the talent consists exactly in that: try five dozen times when others stop at three dozen...! (F.Labelle)
I think that modeling is a subtle mix of zen philosophy and absolute crazyness - but in my case I would not dare to specify the respective percentage of each......

That looks absolutely brilliant!
Looks like plenty of nasty surprises in the kit. I've never built a Williams but often wondered what they were like for fit.

If anything, that turned out a veritable silk purse!
A humbling display of modelling chops and inventiveness.
Kind regards,
Joachim
