Airfix Mosquito XVIII

Post by jamesaw »

Just finished. I've been meaning to build it since the mid 80's and finally got around to it. This one really caused me some grief after I decided to add the landing gear after the main nacelle and wing assemblies had been glued. Big mistake! Couldn't get the gear lined up properly, broke the cross braces. Lost one, found it and lost it again due to errant tweezer manipulation. I ended up modifying a Beaufighter gear part-not ideal but better than nothing. Decals were toast as the cover paper had stuck to them due to humidity. I ended up using a nylon wash pad to get most of the paper off after they had set and then put a coat of liquid decal film on them. Not the best, but they don't look too bad. I used the Airwaves vacform canopy rather than the kit one and installed the pilot and observer to make the cockpit look a little busier. I sanded and scribed a few of the hatches and upper wind details, but didn't go crazy.

Nice one, James.

Getting the undercarriage on square is one of the really tricky parts of this kit. Despite all your troubles, it looks great!

Thanks guys. I just noticed the price sticker on the box which established the stash provenance. Purchased by myself at Beatties in Manchester for 68p in 1978. I could be wrong (It's been a while), but I think Beatties used to be in the downtown part of town that the IRA took a dislike to. Anyone remember?

Despite the undercarriage and decal woes, that has turned out really nicely. Good stuff.

That has turned out really well. It is not possible to see the problems that you had to overcome - always the mark of a good model (and modeller).

Looks good, that. I've got one of these in the stash - don't think I've ever built one before!

Lovely work. Brings back memories of the one I used to have until Mrs Dazzled had an "accident" when we moved.
