Spectre, on Monday. Loved it...

I'm the same age as Sam Mendes, and I always used to say is that the problem for any new Bond film is that you compare it to a mental "distilled essence of Bond" movie in your head, not individual films. I think Sam Mendes thinks the same way, and in Spectre went all out to make that movie. It's a bit incoherent in hindsight, but my gosh what a roller-coaster ride...

Bestest,
M.

John Carpenter's awesome original. Often imitated, never bettered.

Whenever I go into civilisation, about every fortnight or so, I hit the for sale section in local DVD rental stores and often pick up a dozen or more movies for around $2 each, 10 for $20 deals, etc.

As a result I have have wound up with quite an eclectic mix of movies, often taking a bit of risk to make up the ten.

Last night I watched Mel Gibson's Edge of Darkness - an excellent thriller; and the French movie, Special Forces, which is very good and a movie I would place up there with Black hawk Down and The Guns of Navarone. For me the mark of a good foreign language movie is when you don't even notice the subtitles you have to read. If you can find a copy, give it a go...

The Martian a couple of weeks ago. Very impressive and surprisingly witty at times.

As far as shows are concerned, I'm a member of a theatrical group and four weeks ago I took part in their most recent production which was a compilation of greatest hits from the West End and Broadway. It was great fun to do and worked out extremely successful from a commercial point of view as well.

The triple feature this evening was Dragnet, the Ackroyd/Banks version...good for a laugh, not challenging; Super, a take on wannabe superheroes...all I can say is that this was two hours I'll never get back; and Stardust a nice faeries and fantasy tale that deserves a research as I nodded off near the end...

SPECTRE

Quite good, but not as good as Skyfall or Casino Royale. Better than Quantum of Solace, though.

If they were going to end the franchise, that would be the perfect way to do it!

The Eternal Zero (also know as The Fighter Pilot)

Fictional Japanese war film about a controversial WW2 pilot. For a film using CGI effects for its flight sequences, it's actually rather good!

BATTLESTAR GALLACTICA - the pilot of the 80's series. I remember going to the cinema to see it on original release, it being one of only two films released featuring SENSERROUND, the other being EARTHQUAKE. Shame that system was so short lived.
What time is it Eccles??

I went to see Alan Bennett's "The Lady in the Van" this week. Excellent.

By the way, "Battle of Midway" was also released in Sensurround.

Tin Cup - I loved that film when it came out - nothing to do with the totally Stunning Rene Russo of course.

Just recently re-watch the whole Hobbit trilogy - I enjoyed it more the second time around.

Also recently watched some good old war movies on youtube of all places...

Vietnam:

BAT-21
Hamburger Hill
The War Bus

Korea:
Pork Chop Hill
Hell in Korea (A hill in Korea)
Stuart Templeton I may not be good but I'm slow...
