Outstanding collection of slot cars. MRRC used to have several of these as either ready to run or as kits, using the Airfix body shells. I had the Ferrari 250LM and can remember wanting to get the Porsche. Did you use any of the Airfix Magazine conversion articles to build these?

Hi peebeep,

I've seen the odd pic from the Airfix mag slot car conversion articles, but not the full things. Each of my builds is done to use as much as possible or the Airfix / MRRC static kit & slot car bits I have available. See my Photobucket link - there's a sub-folder for each of the cars with a series of pictures of in-progress and finished, with an ongoing build log under each picture.

Cheers !

I love the additional details. Where did you get the figures? They don't look the typical head and shoulders slot car ones.

As yes, always a thorny problem ! That is, getting 1/32 figures in plastic that you can manipulate to make drivers.

Some slot cars do come with a full figure, so no problem there ( and slot car drivers are available seperately from e.g. MRRC).

And some static 1/32 car kits do come with driver figures; for example, the driver in my Aston DB5 is in fact the one that comes with the Airfix Escort.

Otherwise I make up the body / legs / arms using, again, bits of Airfix 1/32 multipose figures, Tamiya and other 1/35 military ones, and Preiser 1/32 civilians. And lots of Milliput !

Those are amazing, nicest builds of Airfix cars I've ever seen. Just spent an enjoyable half-hour or so reading up on the builds on your Photobucket site, must admit I wasn't aware that Airfix made all these subjects. Do you actually race these on a slot-car circuit? I'd be terrified of damaging them after all that effort.

Thanks for the compliment !

Yes, all these cars do get run, and pretty regularly, on a home circuit - friends, family and visitors love to have a go ! They are definitely built to go, not as 'shelf queens' to use slot car parlance. Not that I'd run them on my local club circuit....

Part of the modelling challenge I've set myself is to build them as tough as possible without compromising the appearance. So everything is glued on tight, reinforced and coated etc. but I'll accept the odd bit of damage in return for the fun of running them - it's just another modelling job to repair the odd prang.

Cheers !

OK, a couple or three more.....

Firstly, carefully recovered Airfix Cooper T53 and Ferrari 156 'sharknose' slot cars, from the early 1960's.

And a Jaguar 420, slotted.

What a brilliant set of conversions.

How did you modify the Broadspeed GT?

I remember when they started to race them in the 60's the coupes where classed as GT or modified (I cant remember which) and were totally out classed in the class that they were placed against, so were not a success. Where as the normal Mini Coopers were in a class up against the likes of the Lotus Cortina's and Ford Falcon's and did surpassingly well.

Hi Splash,

Thanks for your appreciation !

The Mini-to-Broadspeed conversion was pretty brutal - for details, please see my build log for it on this link

Following you earlier suggestion I've now got some Multipose figures in the stash and recently added Masterbox's PinUp Girls in to use as female drivers. It seems women were quite often pictured driving road going sports cars is period adverts, the Aurora Austin Healey comes with a female driver (well she is now that I moved the steering wheel to the right place)

Hi James,

Very pretty Healey ( not to mention driver ) !

My Healey's over on my other 'non-Airfix slot cars' thread on this link
