Antonov An-24 Coke AEW

From Apollo and Soyuz, to Gerry Anderson, Irwin Allen, Star Wars and Trek to Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica and those strange, doe-eyed Japanese school girls...to any model kits you can think of, that only exists in imagination.

Antonov An-24 Coke AEW

Post by broadside »

This is the Nu-Bee (VEB) 1/100 scale An-24.
I just like whiffing!
The "dome" is something I found kicking about, I think it is a bearing cap, actually, and the support is a chunk of Mig 25 wing.

Stunning whif, I like very much. I have a couple of the old Plasticart kits to go at and I was going to do straight builds with them but now I'm thinking of ideas for the TU20/TU95 Bear. I may run with your EAW/AWACS idea.

All the best.

Nice use of a VEB kit and very believable to boot. I wonder if we were to put that on the Cold War SIG table (purely out of mischief ;-) ) would anybody question it?

I doubt anybody would question it's use, but you'd more than certainly get someone saying that he'd used the wrong colour primer on the wheel bolts :-D

Very nice, and thought-provoking in terms of backstory. With the V-VS having the Moss and then the Mainstay, this beastie could have been something like an export AWACS for Warsaw Pact allies and other users of Soviet equipment (Egypt, Syria et al.). It could have been optimised for use with the export versions of Soviet fighters, rather than produce an export version of either big AWACS aircraft with the inevitable massive systems changes. Probably cheaper, too, so from the Kremlin's PoV, it could have been a way to increase the capability of their allies without risking the really good stuff they kept for themselves.

Regardless, it's a cracking model, and its always good to see a VEB kit made up and done so well. My sole experience with VEB was their 1/132 (odd scale!) Tu-144, but I remember it turning out well. Wish I still had it... This one looks even better.
