For a beginner

Post by Quadkon »

Hi I'm just starting out doing some models and have bought one to start. My question is about primer, should I use primer and what is the best way to apply it?

Thanks

Hi Quadkon. Personally, I prime practically everything with super market bought Krylon grey rattle can for plastic. I'm told primer has an adhesive in it to help paint stick. Sometimes, I feel priming everything is force of habit; it does make me feel better, though.
My vote is to prime, others find it a waste of time.

Hearty welcome to the forum, bye-the-way.

Well my first piece was to be painted white, I tried this and it seemed like the paint didn't want stay on the plastic. Think I will be priming all pieces =)

Thanks for the reply

What paints are you using? Acrylics can sometimes be very reluctant to lay evenly on un-primed plastic with lighter colours being the worst in my experience.
I would certainly prime beneath white, yellow & oranges using Tamiya primer; expensive but works every time

The paints in that set are acrylic.
For those it is good to put on primer.
One of the best is Tamiya. It can be bought in a spray can. Easiest way to apply it.
A can of Tamiya primer should do several models.
Al speling misteaks aer all mi own werk..
Its not just how good your painting is, its how good the touch-ups are too.

Prime, then polish with a clean terry cloth prior to applying the finishing coat of paint.

As Fred says above, those are acrylic and also perhaps not as good as the larger Humbrol paints you can by separately so a good primer coat will be nigh on essential!

Hope this works for you and look forward to seeing your progress on the forum!

I use Halfords primer spray cans. In the UK, they work out cheaper than the Tamiya primer spray .
