However, 'bucket of sunshine' will look great in the bomb bay!" Did you have a chance to check out "Strategic Air Command"? The B-36 takeoff scene has some great interior shots and in color.
On second thoughts, let's not go to Camelot. It is a silly place!

Gentlemen, I have a copy of B36 in Detail and Scale that I no longer need. Would you like it? Cost?....Two or three 1/48 aircrew for my "Black Widow"
PM me with one of your addresses.

It will but the kit offers you what I think are bays 2 and 3, which unfortunately have the wing box running across the top of them. I think the bomb will still fit into one of them. it may be close to the lower side of the bay but it will fit. I may have to build the frame for holding the bomb once the fuselage is together. There are two large frame assemblies that the conventional bombs go on, so that might help give something to add the bomb frame to. Some pics as promised....

This is the opening for the upper front gun compartment. I used the doors themselves as a guide to cut and this was a mistake as the opening is about 1mm to wide. The compartment (resin) only just fits. On the other side therefore I used a line just inside the doors edge and this was much better.
Image
The bomb bays, 2 and 3 I think. The Mk.17 nuclear device is going to go towards the front unless anyone knows better. I have two good books on the B-36 but no photos with the bomb in place!!!.

Just for fun here are some comparison pics..

and under the Grand Slam Lanc's bomb. Not quite side by side so size comparison is not really possible. The Grand Slam is 26ft 6in long and ten tons, while the Mk.17 is 24ft 5in and 21 tons. Less bomb, more bang!!

A couple of pics to show the limited progress. Mainly the gunsights and the bomb bay framing. There is also the Mk.17 bomb and the evergreen plastic I'm using to make the bomb frame/shackle. Plan at the moment is to build this once the fuselage is together so that I can get the spacing and positioning right, as opposed to measuring and trying to build outside the plane, thereby having to hope it fits and looks straight!!!.

Nice progress so far. It's very big to say the least.

It certainly is. The unassembled fuselage halves have to go in the box at an angle, corner to corner and even then it's a tight fit with the other sprues!!. Would love to see a real life one up close. One of the things I like about the B-36 is the warning on the nose wheel doors:- No smoking within 100 feet(!!). That's a big space needed to get 100 feet from the B-36!

100ft is just shy of the wingspan of a B17!!!
Yup. It's big alright.

Progress so far, the fuselage is together, gun turret compartment is in although I had to prise it off the bulkhead it attached to as it was a millimetre low on the left side. All good now. Wish I had time and so on to do the other two turret compartments but this will have to do. Not sure how many B-36's and turrets I can afford or find space for! (this will be the second to display and the third I have built in my time).

I'm being very lazy and haven't painted the cockpit or crew. Might get away with it as the canopy, although a large dome, has a lot of framing on. Would probably have a been ala Canberra if done a few years later.

That was an update!! :ha: :ha: . But thanks, the gun compartment really adds to the model even at this stage. There's good detail in there too.

An excellent build. Look forward to your finished product.

What a beast of a plane. Can't wait to see it with wings attached.

Where are you going to put it once it's built?
