Some visitors to our birdbath

Post by DavidWomby »

They nest high in a huge Live Oak on our property. We noticed one sat on the lawn yesterday afternoon and then in the early evening........................

Image

Their single chick has now fledged and they don't seem to know quite what to do with themselves this week. They usually move on soon after the chicks have fledged but come back late in the year to build a new nest and start the cycle again. I expect these two will leave shortly.

They would make our cat run for his life. Very cool.

All the best.

Your cat is a wimp and/or a lot wiser than my previous furball was as a adolecent. Something very like these touched down in our backyard with a freshly demolished rabbit, and the cat was pressed up against the window making the chittering noises that mean "snack spotted". I chose not to let her out though, so the raptor got to enjoy it's meal in peace, and the cat lived to a ripe old age. Always wondered who would have come out on top though..

Still, very cool guests, all the more so since they stuck around for a while, and might even be back if you're right about their nesting habits.

Cool!

Panel lines are a tad deep but they look pretty accurate!
Best wishes

If you can walk away from a landing, it's a good landing. If you use the airplane the next day, it's an outstanding landing

Hawks. But not the BAe kind. I think they are 'Red-shouldered hawks'. We also get Ospreys and Bald Eagles nesting near here and they often overfly our place but they never land in our trees.

I know a cat is bigger but, having seen how these birds shred rabbits, squirrels and snakes, I think staying indoors would be a wise move for any cat.

They, or other pairs, have nested in our trees every year since we got here in 2008. They never reuse a nest. Just build a fresh one in another tree each year but close to the old one.

They look very nice, certainly can't see any joints, wonderful detail on the landing gear and nice bit of feathering on the paintwork
A start on my first kit a Hawker Hurricane as been made, a spitfire awaits in the wings and thinking about models to come.

Modelling space in shed coming along nicely.

Those look similar to our indigenous Sparrowhawk. Birds of prey are certainly among nature's most majestic creatures IMHO.

I've seen F-15s painted with Eagle heads and similar with F-16s, but I wonder if anyone has ever painted an aircraft, real or kit, entirely like the plumage of the bird it was named after?
