Cavalry Scouts *** DNF ***
Although MasterBox places this in their Civil War series, why I am not sure, this will be displaced 20 years to the U.S. Cavalry in the American West.
As you can see it is a rather simple kit, with no real action. I will be using Vallejo acrylics.
It does cry out for a "boxart" style display, doesn't it ?

The second horse is a bonus.

That's certainly an interesting scene from the Wild West.
I've always thought those indian scout jobs would have been among the most dangerous to do, with the native population thinking treason and the soldiers not liking them much either.

Re: Cavalry Scouts
Could it be that without a history of cultural influence from the US, it gets rather hard to distinguish between the single de jure civil war, and the many de facto ones? Without wanting to step into the moral minefield associated with them, I think it's safe to say that from a more abstract point of view, both the civil war and the many indian wars were (generally succesful) attempts by the US government to eradicate the culture of part of the population under it's control. For all I know, they were/are treated as a single subject in the former USSR. Their view if history is all but guaranteed to be different from the US, which is different again from Western European, and different again from Chinese, etc.jRatz wrote:Although MasterBox places this in their Civil War series, why I am not sure
Or they could just have messed up, of course
To me, that is one of the defining characteristics of the MB line, and I love them for it. So much nicer than a box of at best loosly connected figures. It does cry out for a "boxart" style display, doesn't it ?

Re: Cavalry Scouts
If you use the rimmed hat it would be post-1970-ish, if you use the kepi it would be pre-1870-ish. It will also depend on what type of weapons are supplied. Has the Scout got a Spencer rifle? Thats anytime post 1860
59North; the Indian Scouts came [generally] from tribes peaceful to the whites and generally opposed to warring tribes, thus they were at war with other tribes anyways. The money and other benefits the Indian Scout received helped his family and tribe greatly

Re: Cavalry Scouts
What would be really neat is if MB released a half-dozen or so cavalry, one with guidon, to be lined up just to the right of this scene, ready to move on.

Re: Cavalry Scouts
Well, they do have another set of US cavalry, but those don't seem to be in the business of waiting patiently: http://www.mbltd.info/3550.htm;jRatz wrote:What would be really neat is if MB released a half-dozen or so cavalry, one with guidon, to be lined up just to the right of this scene, ready to move on.
Calming them down a bit would be a major project is guess

Well, the parts tree is out of the box and bag, so I guess it's a start.

Re: Cavalry Scouts
Today I glued the two horse body halves together and they'll dry overnight.
There are plenty of mold seams to be cleaned but I didn't bother as I could see there was going to be issues where I glued the halves, so I'll just do them all at once.
Pix tomorrow(-ish).

That does seem to be the downside of Master Box; you will have to work for it.jRatz wrote:There are plenty of mold seams to be cleaned but I didn't bother as I could see there was going to be issues where I glued the halves, so I'll just do them all at once.
How good is the shape of the horses? The one than came with the French hussar was positively narrow when viewed from the front or rear

Re: Cavalry Scouts
Here are the horse bodies, the mold and glue seams may not show as much as they do on my bench -- or I did a better job with hot glue & pressure to close some of them off.
Post picture, I ran some filler and they are both sitting to dry for sanding tomorrow.
As to the narrow or not question, I hadn't paid attention at first, but the may be a bit narrow in the chest -- I'll wait until I get the necks and heads on later to see.

Re: Cavalry Scouts
I cleaned the body seams then added the other horse parts.
I'll get to cleaning the head/neck seams and such tomorrow then add some of the gear.
And I can start to assemble the two figures now that I can fit the cavalryman to the horse.
Time to think about a base.
