Fujimi 1/72 F-4K # Finished

Post by novokits »

I'll return to SHAR after this build. So, first - cockpit install in fuselage halve with some problem, two - this kit better than US Phantom's from Fujimi

Apart from the F-4J(UK), the 'British' Phantoms were completely new tool kits.

Nice work so far. I have several Fujimi Phantoms in my stash and I'm waiting for the right time to build them. This build is going to make it difficult for me to resist starting one before I'm ready.

It’s great to see a Royal Navy F4K of 767 squadron being built, I worked on that actual a/c back in the early 70’s as a Naval Aircraft Mechanic, just before I changed branches to become a Naval Aircrewman.

The Fujimi box art was spot on.

The RN only had two F4K squadrons 767 training squadron at Yeovilton and 892 on the Ark Royal, they also had 700P initially as the trials squadron but that became 892.

The Ark would have had Buccaneers from 809, Gannets from 849, Seakings from I think 824 and a dedicated Wessex for SAR and plane guard.

Last weekend I spoke to an armorer who served on 767 squadron and he said he never saw the gun fitted to the Phantom the normal fit was sparrow, sidewinders, dropped tanks and bombs.

I also spoke to an other armorer from 892 squadron who thought they did fit the gun.

I'm sorry if that just confuses the matter.

Splash is pretty spot on,I've never seen a photo of an 892 or 767 kite with the gun pod
fitted.

You can't beat a Fujimi FAA FG-1,they make a superb rendition of the beast.
Mine is an 892 kite with just a drill Sidewinder on the starb'd pylon.

Incidentally,a full re-heat launch burnt enough fuel to keep a Seaking aloft
for two hours, and you though helos were thirsty things  !!!

The gun was/is a ground attack tool and was favoured by the RAF for that role, when they acquired Navy Phantoms.
Often, with lots of rocket pods.
Whilst the Navy aircraft did have a ground attack capability, their main role was intended to be fleet defence, with some recce thrown in.

Ooh goodie, how did I miss you starting this beauty NovoKits. I've yet to build mine but I get the distinct impression this is one of 'those' kits everyone should build once.
