Daz's Dodgy Dogfight Double - **FINISHED**

Select the most rubbish kit in your stash, one that probably has no other chance of seeing a workbench, and build it however you wish - and have fun doing it along with others likewise occupied.
The GB runs from 27 Dec through 31 Jan and your host is DazDaMan.

Nice work so far. Those rivets would take a few mph off the top speed. :)

Wings sanded down and the control surfaces scratched back into the plastic. New rudder glued into place. Balsa wood plug inserted into the rear of the fuselage to make the "low back" fuselage profile....

The fuselage needs deriveted and the plug needs sanding to shape.

It's getting there slowly!

Fuselage sanded and the tailplane attached.....

Still undecided on whether to put the gear up and the bombs on, or the paint scheme....!

Radiators are attached, and I've decided to go for the gear-up option (using spares, since the kit's landing gear won't fit the holes in the wings!)

Given that the Messershmitt 109 is to go with this one, I'm trying to think of a suitable scheme....

.... or maybe a Malta Story plane??

I wish you luck! Because you're going to need it. Ordinarily, I would say you're insane trying to convert a Spit Mk.21 into a Mk.XVI -- different engine, different wing, different tail, etc. -- but that kit is so bad as a representation of the Mk.21 that it's actually easier to do than a decent model would be. It's incredible -- or do I mean horrifying? -- just how bad that kit is.

Go for it, Daren. We fascinated spectators will watch from a distance and applaud your skill and artistry when you turn out a half-decent replica of any mark of Spitfire!

The kit only just passes as a Merlin-engine version, at best! :ha:

There's really not much more to be done, building-wise, so it'll start getting paint on it next week.

OK, so I brought the Messerschmitt 109 out to make a start on.....

Image

The same rivets, the same plastic moulded into a shape vaguely similar to the real thing. The decals are a write-off (as they were with the Spitfire), but I have plenty in the spares box for both.

However, I've still not decided on the eventual colour schemes for them!

I've settled on a traditional late-war colour scheme for the Spit....

...and I've sanded the rivets off the Messerschmitt's wings.

A bit more work on these two....

The '109 has its wings and tailplane attached, and is just waiting on a few minor parts to be fitted before I make a start on painting her.

The Spitfire is just waiting for her pilot to be painted and strapped into the cockpit.

The Spitfire's pilot has been painted and installed, and the new canopy fitted. It's not a perfect fit, and will need some PVA around the edges to fill in the gaps, but it's not bad at all. Once I've done that, it'll be time for the decals.

The Messerschmitt is virtually complete, save for the pilot and canopy. Once I get them in, I'll be able to finish off the colour scheme - once I figure out what that will be!

They both look fantastic, especially given the dodgy nature of those kits!

I really like the look of that Spitfire, especially the fin and rudder. If I hadn't seen the in-progress shots, I'd never know you modified it!
