To be honest, they are great for any large flat areas, but can also 'cut-in' nicely; for example painting the dark brown below the tail planes, the flat edge of the wide brush can be used to make a really sharp edge between the vertical side of the fuselage and the horizontal underside of the tail, but without masking
Best wishes

Looking very good indeed, Iggie and I particularly like the treatment given to the undercarriage oleos and door inner faces, nice bit of weathering that is.

Thank you all for the support! For all the failings (both mine and the kit's  ). it goes together pretty well; anyone thinking of doing one needs to be aware however that the flaps, if not lowered, should be fitted to the upper wing parts before then gluing the upper wing to the lower. This will enable you to ensure a step free finish  Don't ask how I know this.....

The major painting is done; for variety I used AK acrylics applied by brush rather than being good and airbrushing them. They took three coats, but they are so fine that the rivet detail and such is still nicely evident. I also forgot the Sky I.D. band around the fuselage; painting Sky over Dark Brown is not a satisfying pastime  On the plus side, they dry very quickly such that by the time I'd finished one coat, I could then aply the next :-D

A couple of touch ups needed to the wing leading edges, but hopefully onto decals this evening

Very nice-looking Spitfire, Iggie! The cockpit looks great, and that's a very sharp paint job on the exterior!

Cheers all!

This is where I'm at now with the Spitfire: decals are on and seeded with a thin gloss varnish. Cockpit front screen and rear glazing are on and the undercarriage has just been fitted.
I think I'm going to add some gun staining and exhaust stains plus some light oil steaks on the underside but otherwise leave her fairly clean

Thats a stunner, mate. Probably one of the best brush painted finishes I've seen.
