Matilda CDL Canal Defence Light
The Canal Defence Light (CDL) was a Secret Weapon that consisted of a high power carbon arc searchlight, built into a special turret. The idea was that at night the arc light that could be rapidly flashed in different colours would confuse and blind the enemy so the British troops could advance between the formation of CDL’s.
The CDL turrets were fitted on the Matilda, Churchill and Grant chassis but there are only two CDL tanks left in the world one Grant in India and the Matilda in the Bovington Tank Museum in Dorset England.
I have used the Airfix Matilda as the basis of this build and scratch built the turret.

An excellent conversion into an unusual version of the Matilda. It looks like one of those classic British inventions that was knocked up in a shed by some eccentric professor!

Apparently they kept the CDL a secret until both the British & US forces had sufficient units, but by that time the war in Europe was as at an end and the need for them had disappeared, however the Grant versions were used to protect the captured Bridges on the Rhine at night from saboteurs.ShaunW wrote: It looks like one of those classic British inventions that was knocked up in a shed by some eccentric professor!

So I'm told the Matilda CDL was used for the Rhine Crossing in March 1945

I read a report that said the light had a funny optical illusion anything at night floating in the river like logs or people when illuminated had the appearance of floating above the water in mid airLarryH57 wrote:So I'm told the Matilda CDL was used for the Rhine Crossing in March 1945

Re: Matilda CDL Canal Defence Light
Two regiments of the 1st. Tank Brigade were equipped with CDL Matildas in the Middle East but these tanks were only used for training and never saw action, they were later fitted with standard turrets, in the UK similar Matildas were used for training. The CDL tanks used in action in Normandy by 79 Div were M3 Grant CDL tanks.

Cheers for that info David, I plan to build a Grant CDL using the old Airfix kit.
