Fantasy wildlife - elephants you don't want to mess with...

From Apollo and Soyuz, to Gerry Anderson, Irwin Allen, Star Wars and Trek to Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica and those strange, doe-eyed Japanese school girls...to any model kits you can think of, that only exists in imagination.

Fantasy wildlife - elephants you don't want to mess with...

Post by beany »

Nellie and her calf have packed their trunks and are heading off to the circus - the circus being ScaleModelWorld at Telford this weekend. This is a another build inspired by a photo in Roger Dean's book Views, this time of the models he made himself when working on the Osibisa album cover concepts - which became flying elephants without the armament on the LP covers!). Hopefully the paint will be dry by tomorrow!
(I was going to call the calf Dumbo but I had to hack the ears off of the model so it didn't seem fair - Mwahahaha  ).

If you don't come away with a prize, then there is no justice in the world! Awesome imagination (on both your's and Roger Dean's part) and execution. Brilliant!
Best wishes

I'm really glad to see this build come to fruition, Al, taking inspiration from Dean's artwork and turning it into 3-D art like that really is a great bit of fantasy modelling.

Nice! I wonder who would win in a gunfight; them or the Tarkus?

thanks for the kind comments gents. Here are my pair of packing pachyderms on their first outing - to Telford this weekend. I made a foamboard poster with images and the Roger Dean album covers to explain the project. It was well admired and certainly well photographed.

...and nicely matched by the skull-nosed Blackbird up the other end of the table. That's Blackbird as in SR-71, for those who weren't there. :???: 8-) Did that concept come from the same artist as the turretephants?

Probably these two -- more advanced guns than my favourite tankadillo (also the source of my nom de plume, except that I forgot how to spell it  :-D ).

Absolutely. Both concepts were album cover projects, albeit for very different bands back in the 70s.

That SR71 is another great interpretation in model form of Roger Dean's artwork. He certainly had a very fertile imagination and/or had been experimenting with some very dodgy chemicals in order to come up with these ideas :ha: Far out, man.
