Tinted visors and aviation goggles

Post by TeeELL »

Hi,
I thought I would write this as I have put forward a suggestion for representing tinted visors to a couple of you.

Like many, I have used ‘silver’ to represent visors and goggle glass but recently I found an alternative.
Military helmet visors can be clear or tinted (several RAF helmets feature both). My method of producing a tinted visor is as follows: (I am sure I don’t need to tell you to allow the paint/varnish to dry thoroughly between stages!)
1. Paint the helmet the appropriate colour, including the visor.
2. Use your favourite clear gloss to cover the visor - 2 coats if necessary to achieve a really smooth finish.
3. Cover the varnish with Tamiya ‘clear smoke’.
4. Apply a top coat of gloss varnish.

If you need more tint depth repeat stages 3 & 4.

For clear visors and clear goggle lenses the gloss varnish and polish method would be appropriate.

Hope that helps?
Tony
