Mach Models Sikorsky S51 1/72

Post by Spearjig »

As the per the forums guidelines - a honest appraisal of this kit.

It comes in a pretty flimsy box with artwork that would make you think its from the 1950s however this was produced in 1992.

Carefully opening the box and your presented with 2 grey spruces, one clear ( in the loosest use of the word) a flimsy A4 instruction sheet and a equally flimsy decal sheet. The spruces including the glazing are all in one bag.

The parts themselves are molded in very thick soft plastic with poor definition and lots of flash.

Two sets of marking are on the decal set, a american version whos colour scheme is discribed as "the box front" and a french machine in green

To be honest I would say that they would simply crumble in water. The set for the american aircraft is missing a star and also the warning lettering is wrong. The kit is supposed to depict an American machine but has boxes and an exhaust for a British built one.

On the whole its a pretty rubbish kit but Im not aware of any other in 1/72. It will take a bit of scratch building and modifying to turn into a decent finished product.

Nice review, the box looks like it's taken a battering at some time!
It might take a bit of effort to sort out the parts from the flash though
Best wishes

Now, isn´t that cheeky!? These French Mach-2-guys put a tell-tale symbol right onto the top of that box:
See that desperate hand, coming right out of the midst of a modellers´despair, grasping and yearning for inspiration from high above from the gods, to find the courage to build this kit..... :-D  :-| ......

What a shame, it’s a real surprise that no mainstream company makes a decent version of this Icon of an a/c .

Thanks for the review.

I'm going to have to build this now. I cant give it to my niece as it might put her off models for life and I cant send it to a charity shop cause its box is so bad!

Interesting to see how much Mach 2 kits have improved over the past two decades (i.e. not at all).

To be fair to Didier, he's a one-man operation with a prolific output of kits of subjects nobody else makes; even though many of them are definitely worthy of a mainstream kit.
